Crunch i understand that Omar has done a couple of good picks on getting other people's leftovers but Nieves just could not handle it last night when he was starting to get hit hard and was falling behind hitters. I know its just one bad start and i would give him another 2 before we can actually judge him but the truth is this team is worst than the Brooklyn Cyclones who actually have a better bunch of guys than the professional team. I see how they move and play hard and even pick each other up which we need on this team and no one seems to care. Omar created a lot of holes for this team and only relied on 3 guys which 2 already are on the DL. We need a bat and a starting pitcher to just keep up with Phillie. We been extremely lucky that Phillie are in the same boat as us that they are having issues with pitching and hitting. If we come out 6-18 on this road trip we can just pack up and wait 4 years before DUMB Omar will hopefully not be signed again.
Allowing me to make a few points. First involving Nieves, whatever Omar and the Mets can get from him in terms of wins is a plus. Right now the Mets got 3 wins out of him. Until Maine returns, don't expect Omar to make a trade for a pitcher that will cost them any of their top 10 prospects. I'm referring to Cliff Lee and Erik Bedard, look for Omar to find a pitcher of less status, who can contribute without costing a high level prospect; the same goes for a hitter. Secondly, You feel that Omar should of had a backup player behind the core players. No other contending team has this, so how can you expect Omar and the Mets to have this. If the Phillies lost Ibanez, Howard, Utley, Myers, Durbin and Blanton like the Mets lost Reyes, Beltran, Delgado, Maine, Putz and Perez. They would be in worst shape than they are presently. same for the Marlins, Cardinals, Dodgers and the list goes on. I know Omar has made bad moves as a Met GM (Castillo signing/Perez signing/Alou signing(partically, Alou when healthy, had a 30 game hitting streak, Met record). However; I would guess that if you list his goods trades, signings with his bad trades and signings as the GM for the Mets, you will see that he falls on the plus side.

Also, everyone needs to remember the other starters he brought to spring training to compete for the 5th spot in the rotation and to serve as injury replacements. Livan Hernandez is tied for second on the team with five wins, and even Tim Redding has had a couple of good starts.   Gary Sheffield is tied for team lead in homeruns, Jeremy Reed is batting over .300, Alex Cora has been more than an adequate back up for Reyes, and Elmer Dessens, another castoff, is fourth in the International League with 11 saves. Like it not, there actually is a budget, and he has to stick to it.
At some point this season, look for Omar and the Mets to bring up Dessen if he continues to do well in buffalo. I understand that Martinez has been sent down and Evans has been called up. Not sure why Evans deserves a call up based on his lack of performance this season. Eveyong is talking about how to improve this team by the trading deadline, well how about Ryan Garko of the Indians. He's in his final year of his contract, only making $446k this season and can play 1st base and LF. The question is; do the Indians want to trade him and if so, how much do they think he is worth. Just a name I came up, I have no idea if the Indians would consider any trade offers for him.

For all the Omar bashers, how about giving Omar credit for finding and signing Nieve in spring training after the Astro's gave up on him. You guys are quick to point out Omar's mistakes (all GM's make them), but when you goes something good, you guys suddenly clam up. I understand it's only 2 starts, but no one thought Nieve would contribute at all in 2009, let alone 2 wins for this ball club. How about it, let's see who is man enough to come forward.

I know Nieve pitched a good game in Yankee Stadium but remember that many of the guys have not seen this player before which he did get an edge on that and the other way around as well. But the truth is i would give him another 3 starts before we can see if he is a gem. Many of us have jumped on the boat for wanting Ollie back too and now look at him $12 million and he only pitched what 3-4 games in the majors this year so far and still he is only an average pitcher.

I knew about Cora and the way he played due to that a friend of mine is a scout in the industry but onlylooks at college players for KC. He told me about some of the players we had and can contribute to the team if used the right way. Omar was not skillful getting Santana or K-Rod because one thing he had was money and also we got K-Rod because we got lucky due to that many of the teams already had a closer. The angels would of out bid us if the rumor about his velocity would of dipped this year because of the amount of use he had last year. But i still would not count on Omar taking this team or any team to the World Series.

Too early to get too excited but Nieve has a good arm.  Another example of where Omar excels.  His drafting may be questionable, contracts may be too generous and may have bid against himself for Ollie but he can find these diamonds in the rough.  Who here thought Cora, Tatis, Santos, or Sheffield were great moves?????  I still think a healthy Putz (Boy does that sound wrong), Sean Green and Jeremy Reed will all play key roles in this teams success.  And tell me he didn't do a masterful job of playing his hand in landing Santana and K-Rod!!!!!  Now Nieve emerges in a key spot with a 95 MPH fastball in a big game.  He does give exhorbitant contracts to some guys but if you're trying to get those role players that every team needs, he does pretty well.  As far as Castillo, the contract was ridiculous, but Castillo's .370 OBP has been key in keeping the Mets lineup going while Reyes is hurt.  Please no cracks about the pop-up here.  I remember!!!!!!!!!!  He's still our best option at second base and in the lead-off spot until Reyes returns.

I do not profess to be a scout but being in the L.A. area I knew about Cora. Watching him play for the Dodgers you knew he was a solid player. There were umpteen replays on TV out here of his at bat where he fouled off 14 straight pitches before he homered. Additionally, all my Dodger Fan friends out here were sure to remind me we had a good one when Omar signed him. They were all bummed when the Dodgers let him go.

Nieve definitely deserves another start, he reminds me of a young Bartolo Colen with his built and delivery. Now if he can become a Bartolo Colen, the Mets may have found a diamond in the rough.

This guy seems to be ready for a spot in this ailing rotation until he proves otherwise.  He pitched well against a good offensive team.
