"Prior today’s game, Jerry Manuel specifically
"Cora was 2 for 4 with two RBI and a walk, hitting leadoff during tonight’s win against the Cardinals. :Cora, speaking to reporters following tonight’s game, said:
"…i like this message… i’m a sucker for the underdog, so i find i am extra excited to root for this current group of players, knowing they’re looked at as being down and out, with reporters and other fans making fun of them… this is a different kind of a challenge, and i’m glad a guy like cora is around to help lead the fight."
Please note that the credit for moving the team along tonight was given to Cora, not the core. This is what the Mets really needed - leadership that wants to win and plays like it!!! That quality which is not based on salary, media promorion, and conferred by upper management. Something the Mets have lacked the past three years and could make the core expendable!

I would like to know your suggestions of fixing the Mets. Who would you like to see Omar get (realistically) to improve the team. This team is not playing at full strength and are only 2 games back, thanks to the Phillies (part of the game). shields is that good and the Mets have gotten more out of Sheffield (8 hrs) and Reed (hitting around 300 as a backup player) than anyone on this board could have predicted. 1st base production hurt by Delgado's injury, not much you can do about that. Castillo's numbers are better than last season, despite his bone head play against the Yankees and thank god Omar found Santos. In regards to Wright and Beltran, if the Mets were to trade both or either one of them, regardless who we got in return; the fans in New York would only then appreciate their abilities. Wright is adjusting and trying to adapt to the new ball park and Beltran has been playing hurt for the past 30+games. Many fans on this board are quick to bash Omar for his bad moves/decisions (all GM's make them), but how about the sultle moves he has made like: Hernandez, Santos, Nieve, Cora, Dessens (doing well in Buffalo and will be called up and contribute this season), Redding (despite an 0-2 record, has given them innings and deserves at least 2 wins). Lance Broadway acquired in the Castro trade was a #1 pick of the White Sox and I am going on record now and tell everyone that Broadway will be a pleasant addition down the road. This does not include last season pickup of strokes and previous years with Feliciano. Omar is not perfect and again, no GM is, he shouldn't have given Castillo that deal, along with Perez. But we do not know whether the Wilpons were involved in any of those decisions, my guess is that they were. During his tenure; he has strengthen the Mets farm system from being in the bottom tier before his arrival to now being in the middle to upper tier. He has loaded the farm system with quality young pitchers like Parnell, Niese, Holt and young hitters like Murphy, Martinez, Flores, just to mention a few. Again, Omar shouldn't be given all the credit or criticism, he has many behind the scene scouts and assistents all working together for the good of the team. I mean no disrespect to you, but Instead of pointing the finger, how about coming up with a solution. So I ask you again, who would you like to see Omar acquire to improve this team. Crunch, Feel your pain, no deals , bring the kids up, let's see what we got , go from there. Forget Omar, he's been 50-50. Most talented players don't go to MLB cause they have to spend so much time in the minor leagues. Thats's a shame. Bring them up, play the game , you got it or you don't, period. let's find out, Not in favor of keeping kid's in the ML and not knowing if they are good or not. Find out ! Go from there. I'm so tired of trusting the ML manager to say this kid is good or not. That's why nobody goes for ML baseball anymore. it's too long of a season. I know they do good, but can you see examples of doing bad ? Mike Piazza was the last on the list to draft ? Sometimes, Minor league managers are so wrong about a player.

Matthew Cerrone of metsblog.com reports:
"I am excited, and proud of how the Mets played tonight.
Instead, the Mets kept their spirits up, and out-hustled, out-hit and out-pitched the first-place Cardinals, and they did it as a team."
This is significant! Its not a matter of who they get if Beltran, Reyes, or Wright is traded. Right now, they are not indispensible. It just might be that the team is jelling without key parts of the core. Is it possible that keeping them is actually hindering the team? What happens over the next two or moer weeks might give us an indication. Let's see what happens.

Hats off to Johan for stepping up and throwing a good game. My question is: Is Shields that good of a pitcher or is this one of the most lethargic offenses in a long time? Nothing in left field, nothing at first base, nothing at 2B. A castoff catcher as a big surprise. Wright and Beltran are the softest.300 hitters I ever saw. Cora is a nice replacement. Not to worry though because Omar is bringing Nick Evans up. Can Minaya lure Jeff Conine and Shawn Green out of retirement? This product on the field is disgustingly pathetic. Nice Inaug. season at the new ballpark. What a disgrace for Mets fans to endure.

The Mets, while at home, let their ace down. Beltran, Wright, and Church, the 3-4-5 hitters were two for eleven batting today. Wright is in a three for 22 funk right now. Yes, the opposing pitcher gets some credit for his game. Its too bad that this team doesn't rise to the occasion, especially behind Santana.
Its another missed opportunity for the rollercoaster Mets. The Phillies lost to Baltimore, 6-5. When will this team ever wake up? |
