Things couldn't look much worse. Management is an embarassment. Injuries are crippling. As Mets fans, we've seen this kind of outlook before. Question is, Is it over or can they still turn it around? Let me couch my response by saying, this may be more wishful thinking than likely. However, as a diehard Mets fan, I am prone to delusional views. Anyway, here goes.
I think there is still time to get back in it. First, the Phillies are on an unbelievable tear. That is usually followed by a funk that may bring them somewhat back to reality. The acquisition of Lee may put the idea of taking the division beyond delusional. The wild card is a long shot but could happen if the injuries get back in time. The Mets have a steady diet of Diamond backs and Padres for the next two weeks. Now is the time to get hot. If they can go on a 10-5 run over the next two plus weeks against these struggling teams, they could be in the thick of the race for the wild card with over 40 games left. If Reyes, Beltran and Delgado come back to the lineup and Putz and Wagner come back to the bullpen, this team could make that run. Realistic?? Maybe not, but wouldn't it be nice?? Remember our two miracle teams, '69 and '73, were both in as bad a position entering August as this team. The difference is the talent to make the run. I know "If" is the biggest, little word in the Engliish language but if the injuries return by August 15th, it may not be over yet. There, I said it. Now you all know I'm a little crazy, but I'm a delusional Mets fan. At times like this, I remember Tug McGraw. "You Gotta Believe". I'm going to the game today and I'll be displaying my Piazza jersey with pride. "Let's go Mets!!!!!!" | |
