Manual pulled Maine out because of stiffness in his right shoulder. Let's hope it's not a serious issue and he doesn't any starts.
It looks like this may not be serious and they will be cautious with him. I am glad to see that as this guy is important not only to the success of this season but the at least the next few seasons to come.

I believe it will go down to the last week of the season with the Mets, Phil and Marlins all battling it out for the division title. I also believe that the wild card is coming out of the central division, so the Mets need to win the NL east division or they are out. The Mets are in better shape than anyone else in their division in regards to the SP. With Santana, Maine, Perez, Pelfrey Martinez and let's not forget about El Duque (he will contribute before the season ends). No other team in the NL east can match that, now the Mets need to do is bonafide the bullpen at the trading deadline, because that's their weakness. Well, John Maine is struggling and not having, actually starting, a good second half. He only went 4 and a third innings tonight. The bullpen, after having yesterday off, didn't help much either. Maine is either going to be good or mediocre. Right now, its the latter. If he doesn't step up his game, this race is going down to the wire. Its a matter of who wants it more!

I agree with everyone's assestment on Maine. I look for him, along with Santana, Perez, and Pelfrey to have a good second half. Pedro worries me a little, if he can be a .500 pitcher in the second half and not have any injuries, I would be happy. The other four starters have struggled periodically, however; all four have winning records and I truely believe that the second half will bring better success for all four. How many teams in the ML have four of their SP with winning records.

He takes his aggression on his sleeves and that's not a good thing for him. When he falls behind he starts to think to much and he loses his focus on the batter. I think he needs to stay away from baseball these 4 days and just relax with his family. Then when he returns try and fix his issue with his slider. He has problems using it when he is ahead of the count.

I couldn't agree more. He's struggling a little with his command but when it comes together, he's going to be great.

With the exception of the walks he pitched a pretty good game. What I did like was his comments after the game. He said his start was a waste. It is nice to see a Met express disappointment in his own performance rather than making excuses. It also shows inner drive to always want to improve. That make-up plus his stuff will someday make Maine an Ace! |
