Today (12/28)'s edition of Newsday on line has some improved coverage
IntrestedObserver

We in the track & field community appreciate Newsday's attempt to increase the coverage of the sport in their online edition.  However, in the interest of not confusing the reading public that may not be fully aware of the races that are contested at Suffolk County Community College's West Campus fieldhouse, the corrections listed below are brought to your attention.  Thank you in advance for correcting these errors.

There are some pictures(numbers 7,9 11-14 & 17 on the 12-31-07 edition of "Photos: Winter Season" which show athletes competing in the 55 meter dash and the 55 meter hurdles for girls and 55 meter dash for boys that mention that the races are 100 meters long (the article found at ( http://www.newsday.com/sports/highschool/ny-skhstrack285517122dec28,0,5430372.story).  The Suffolk County Community College West Campus fieldhouse houses a 200 meter oval with a straightaway that measures about 90 meters from the west wall to the east wall.  It's not possible to run the 100 meter dash nor the 100 meter hurdles at Suffolk West's facility on the straightaway. The body of the article does correctly report that the races in the short dash and hurdles are at the 55 meter distance. ("Malverne's Xavier Brooks was third at 39.7. Brooks won the boys 55-meter in 6.8. Parazzo was a step behind Brooks. The girls 55-meter was won by New Hyde Park's Ashley Bowman with a 7.6."  "Manhasset's Patricia McNish.... finished first in the 55 hurdles with a time of 9.2 seconds. Southside's LaToya Campbell finished second with a 9.3 and Sewanaka's Christina Johnson was third at 9.4. Baldwin's James Lowe led the boys competition at 8.2, Valley Stream Central's Zico Williams and Andre Anderson placed second and third with times of 8.3 and 8.4."

Just one person's observations!Cool

I'd like to say thank you for improving coverage as well, but field events aren't nearly as covered as running events. Just as an example, I've seen that Oceanside shot putter, Debbie Persall has won the past 3 crossover meets. At the most recent, she won by a margin of over 4 feet. Also, Island Trees high jumper, Michelle Duffy has been almost as dominant in her event. If races that are decided by seconds have coverage, why not events that are decided by feet?

rumor has it that Newsday is going to be completely taking HS sports out of the paper and move t entirely to the website...opinions on the matter?

taking hs sportsd out of the paper? thats not right.

and as i was present at both county champs yesterday i think there are a few events that deserve more coverage. emily lipari wins the class b 1500 in quite the effort. two girls break 8 minutes in the class b 1500 walk. brian riley  runs a 9:38 in the 3200 class b. maddie adams wins both the class a 1000 and 1500.

what i think was pretty impressive was oceansides small showing. i only saw about 10 kids there for them, and their boys 4x8 took the win. also their girls shot putter pearsall took the shot put win. i hear she is undefeated for the season?
