regarding alex doersam how would newsday recognize her all league soccer all league basketball and all cou nty track 2 years thats very rare That is a very very good accomplishment and most student athletes do not accomplish this, but it has been done before and I would say there is atleast one guy and girl every year that do that or better even in League 1 and 2, which is alittle harder to accomplish for other sports besides track and xc. Newsday has lists of all league all county and all long island for all sports on this site which is nice. Many things that can be done and one example is EAB and channel 12 do a scholar athlete every month. Usually a student who has a high gpa, class rank, high SAT score, particiaptes in clubs, and has athletic accomplishments. I have not followed them but I would say a perfect girl for a scholar athlete based on what I know about you runners baseed on academics and athletics would be Sarah McCurdy, Jaclyn Marshall, or SueJin Ahn. I believe Alex's coach and/or guidance counselor would have to nominate her for the EAB Award. There is the Wendy's HS Heisman which has passed.(Sarah McCurdy was a finalist) There are many local papers that would love to do an article on an all around student. More you put yourselves out there the better your chances are for everything from awards, honors, up to scholarships. Milesplit has that new thing this year which is great for college coaches to see. It is your own little webpage with pictures, articles, rankings, and times. Great new recruiting tool.
| SECTIONXIFAN08Posts: 28Location: Join Date: February 9, 2008 11:59 PMSend Message | Laura Greene of Sachem East was ALL State Soccer, All Long Island Soccer(Best player in Suffolk County), as a Senior this year. She was also probably All County for a few years as well in soccer and team captain. This winter she has ran a 1:40 600, a 3:01 1000(State Qual Champ.), and a 5:06 1500. Thats an off year for her in track. She has accepted a scholarship for track to Virginia Tech and hopefully will play soccer there as well? Her Jr and Sr year of soccer she had 49 goals and was doubled teamed a lot of the time while her team was becoming Suffolk class AA Champions both years. Her track team won League 1 this year as well. As a Junior she ran a 2:10, 800M and a 4:34, 1500M at Divisions. As a Junior she also ran a 4:56 in the mile and I haven't seem too many articles on her.
Its very hard especially being a female athlete and track and xc makes it even harder. Its rough because obviously football and basketball comes first to most people. With the USA soccer teams on the rise ad runners coming up in the spotlight You kids can change all of this. Keep working hard and do your very best becuase you are all unbelievable and amazing with the academics and athletics and the level at which your are all competing at. Just never ever settle for second fiddle to anyone, any gender, or any other sport.
Goodluck at States, Pepsi HS Hall of Fame Classic, 71st Eastern States championships, NSIC, and NIN and I'll see you all there.

| SECTIONXIFAN08Posts: 28Location: Join Date: February 9, 2008 11:59 PMSend Message | Oh Oh Ohea, Where has she gone??????Hope not too far!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Came out of no where running a personal best at Sunken Meadow in a time of 19:32 which is like 63rd of all time in Section XI history on the Sunken Course. Runs an 18:45 at the state meet, a 19:15 at FEDS(tough course similar to Sunken Meadow), and a 19:04 at New Balance Ocean Beach in RI and disappears? Caroline Ohea, Ward Melville's 8th grader and the NYS 8th grader of the year and maybe even the national 8th grader of the year for XC didn't seem to run winter track. Does she swim? Do gymnastics? Must be another sport or club. This girl in xc reminded me of Jillian Mastroianni who ran back in the 90's for Sayville. Hope all is well and next year in xc is going to be another year of great running!!!!!!1 | |
| SECTIONXIFAN08Posts: 28Location: Join Date: February 9, 2008 11:59 PMSend Message | Congrats to 2 great runners from Suffolk County for tonights mile race at the Armory. Suffolk girls took 1st and 2nd and many might not have picked Jaclyn over Sarah but it happened. Jaclyn Marshall(Kings Park), ran 5:00.31 and Sarah McCurdy(Bayshore) came in a close second in 5:01.79 in the girls mile. Great race and times by both girls. McCurdy doesn't lose much in the 600 to 1600 so it must have been one amazing race to watch. Congrats to both girls. Great job Jaclyn. Glad your back. Goodluck to both of you at States where you will meet again in the 1600. | |

| SECTIONXIFAN08Posts: 28Location: Join Date: February 9, 2008 11:59 PMSend Message | Another Great race by RYAN SHERIDAN,Iona's(WALT WHITMAN) phenom frosh, on March 1st at the NACAC in Orlando, Florida. Running against some of the best from many countries, Ryan once again just misses first by a couple of seconds. RYAN ran the Men's Junior 6K race in a time of 17:23 beating out the third guy by 9 seconds. Would have loved to see him run his Jr and Sr season of HS and watch him demolish the competition, had he been healthy. So glad Iona gave him a shot and I am sure they are happy they did. Next year when Iona wins the national championship with Ryan and Joe Parks(Deer Park) many coaches are going to wish they recruited alittle harder in Suffolk County. | |

| SuffolkParentPosts: 2Location: Join Date: March 9, 2008 7:33 PMSend Message | SectionXl Fan, you seem to know all the times and people running track/cross country. Are you a coach? Why don't you think about writing a track/cross country newspaper for suffolk county? | |
| mcfanPosts: 19Location: Join Date: January 28, 2008 3:16 PMSend Message | I agree with suffolk parent. XI fan gives out more info than can be found anywhere. I suspect he coaches girls somewhere. Maybe Newsday will take notice and give him a column at least once a week. He is at least as knowledgable as anybody currently writing. HEY NEWSDAY YOU LISTENING? | |
| SECTIONXIFAN080Posts: 2Location: Join Date: March 13, 2008 2:09 PMSend Message | First I would like to say Good Luck to all the boys and girls running the next few days at the Armory for the NSIC and the NIN in Landover Md, as well as the NCAA Championships at the University of Arkansas. There will be many of you competing and I would write all your names up but right now time is an issue. Most of the runners running the next few days will be the regulars who run in state quals and states. I have to keep changing the screen name a little to get on because for some reason I keep getting logged off and when I sign back on it says my password doesnt exist. When I try to make a new name it says the screen name already exists. Anyone else having this problem?I am computer illiterate and it is about the 3rd time it has happened to me. I also would like to say thank you to the two people who wrote the last two blogs. It was very nice of you. I have said in the past I would have written articles on the sport or other things about the island track and cross country. I also have mentioned to people on here as well as in person about programs which I never see at any Invitationals that I go to on this Island but see in other states that I have been to to watch cross country and track meets. Now on everyone's last question..... No I am not a coach but I am in the process of becoming one right now..... stay tuned. I am sure this site has not helped me to accomplish my goal, since I have made a few people upset over my honesty the past year and a half. I am learning 1st hand from one of the best coaches in the state right now, who has years of experience and I hope to be working in XC in the fall of 08. I presently have 2 daughters and 2 sons who run XC and Track. Two being very accomplished in both sports and two hopefully on the way up in the next few years. That would be the reason that I do know alittle about the sport and runners because I am always at high school and college meets. But enough about me, even though I love to see the positive blogs and would be happy to see more lol!!!! They are greatly appreciated. Its all about the kids though!!!!!!!!!!!! Goodluck to the whole island at NISC. Do your best and be proud!!!!! LETS GO SECTION XI, SECTION VIII, AND THE CHSAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

| SuffolkParentPosts: 2Location: Join Date: March 9, 2008 7:33 PMSend Message | Well SectionXl Fan we wish you the best of luck finding a coaching job for 08. You should do well with it. Maybe then you can write your own articles for suffolk county. About not being able to sign on again. I haven't seem to have that problem yet. Do you have any newsday enemies? lol They really should hire you to write cross country/track even if it only once a week. What about a web page for the runners. You would provide more information then other web sites. Wishing all you runners the best. Go get them! and enjoy! | |
| SECTIONXIFAN080Posts: 2Location: Join Date: March 13, 2008 2:09 PMSend Message | Well Suffolk Parent I am not sure if you were on here during the cross country season but if you were you know the only one I didn't upset was the kids. Even though that is all that matters, I had a few coaches, I'd say a parent or two and even outside the blog people from Newsday a little upset if I can put it that way.LOL I have mentioned on here and to Newsday about sending them information and writing for free. I have sent in information during the XC season on all of the teams and kids but I can't print it too.LOL I think we have some of the greatest coaches on this island, as well as some of the best runners and especially in the state. Look at what these athletes are doing in college and you will see. I might know a few things about people, stats, and rankings but by far the best stats and up to date information you can get will be at Armory track, Dyestat, Tully Runners, and Just-in-time and Trackshark for college. I think over the next couple of weeks I am going to do something on the ones who never seem to get articles about them.... The COACHES who spend hours and hours maturing, training, mentoring, and tutoring these kids for athletics and especially for life. |
