Rumor has it the Bellport boys sprinters aren't running because they've been suspended. Something about the football field starting construction that would have caused the boys divisionals to be moved from Bellport's track, so the sprinters took a stand and led a rally to delay the construction and keep the meet at Bellport's track...and got suspended for their troubles. They run very well so it's a shame if true. If Newsday is sending someone out to the track for the second day on Monday, they ought to investigate. Having grown up in a town where football is king, it sounds all too plausible that anyone who stands up to football will be crushed by the administration. I know if they were building a track come playoff time for the bulldogs football team, it would have been delayed by one of the 15 coaches the bellport football team has. A little hard the coach is the dean i believe. There are many great sports at bellport and the football team is still very good but it isnt what it use to be in the 80,s and 90's. Runners have had more acheivements based on statistics, rankings, state and national champions ( Dont forget Chrissy and Sheffey)Horseley, Payne,Weinert, Fath, Fehn, Young, Klein, just to name a few and theres plenty more. Construction could have waited a week if that was the only reason these kids were suspended. They could be hanging out on station rd but instead they are doing extra for themseleves and the school and that should be honored and praised. Plenty of good sports at Bellport and there are many great guy and girl runners. Also the new suffolk king of football is down the road alittle east now anyway, so give all your athletes the same time, effort, and dedication equally. | |
