No disrespect to Section V ,but a lot of us "longislanders" are unfamiliar with those other sections until we see them at Easterns or States. Either way it should be a fast meet.
| NYSSwimfan57Posts: 37Location: Join Date: January 14, 2009 9:42 PMSend Message | I'm not sure if Will Brophy is that fast...I could be wrong but I've seen he's posted 47's. Also take into consideration that Holy Trinity's Jack Wagner has posted a 45.03 100 free (buffalo) and 1:37.7 (Short course nationals)! Goodbye state record?? And a 20.8 50 free! How come you don't hear about this kid in the paper? Also, I highly doubt Luchsinger will swim the 100 back..it's not his event. At a meet in Pennsylvania he posted a 48.8 100 fly and 1:38.3 200 free!! Are we going to see another fall of state records? Will Wagner go one up with Luchsinger in the 200 free?? Will Luchsinger graduate with 3 state records!?? No disrespect to the other sections, NYSPHSAA Swimmer, although section 5 is very strong, it's almost unfair to compare some sections to eachother. Section 8 is half of long island (Nassau) while the other half is section 9 (Suffolk). Also some large schools (Shenedehowa) have over 6,000 kids in their highschool...Most Nassau/Suffolk County Highschools are lucky to have 1,500 kids. I'm anxiously awaiting the results of the NYS Champs. So many great races to come...How many state records will be broken this March? | ||
| NYSPHSAASwimmerPosts: 13Location: Join Date: January 28, 2009 2:04 PMSend Message | Yes, I agree, point well taken Section 8 is not the biggest of the sections. I realize that this is a Long Island paper, but I'm just saying Section 8 will be getting some good races at States, even though I think they are going to be this year's State Champs by section. I think we also need to know that for many of these elite swimmers, such as Dyer, Feely, and Luchsinger, varsity meets including States aren't that "big" for them if you know what I mean. I mean, all of them have been to Junior Nationals and Luchsinger swam the 200 fly at Olympic Trials, so States might not even be a big deal for him. They might not even do a full taper for this meet considering Junior Nationals are only a few weeks after the State meet. And NYSSwimfan, Brophy hasn’t gone under 47, but he’s a racer and I know that from experience. Obviously he will probably not beat Wagner, but there are many other swimmers as fast as Brophy outside of Section 5 that will add to the excitement. Like Phil Aronica from Orchard Park in Section 6 he’s been 47 low, or Lucas Zelehowsky from Auburn in Section 3 he’s been 51 in the 100 fly and his teammate Pat O’Donnovan who goes a 50 in the 100 back.. And by the way guys, I have a website that should be interesting for you, if you don’t already know it: http://nbsharks.com/HighSchool.htm, its perfect, all the top ten times in each section | ||

Fully agree that this isn't 'the meet' but hey with the increased competition out there you just never know...Thanks for the website by the way, nice find!

| nassauswimfanPosts: 61Location: Join Date: December 10, 2007 7:51 PMSend Message | Finally some swimming talk!! Did anyone catch Sports Illustrated last week? Logan Todhunter was featured in the faces in the crowd section!!!
As far as relays go....look for this weekend to answer some questions. If you look at the DIvisional psych sheet...looks like Jericho is trying to get back on track by having Solomon, Alex Wiu Thomas Chang and Joe Na all do 1 event. Seems maybe they are going after the 400 free relay? All 4 guys have been 52.6 or better and last year Alex Wu was 50.9 and Solomon and Na split 50. What a boos that wouuld give the Jayhawks! LB this season doesnt have the distance swimmers to compete with Jericho or GNS. Where Jericho has a shot is the fact that they keep finding sprinters...George Peters went 23.7 at easterns. That could help Coach Stern move kids around and try and go for all 3 relays/ Woody Davis will not go down without a fight...no one count LB out!

| NYSSwimfan57Posts: 37Location: Join Date: January 14, 2009 9:42 PMSend Message | Did cabasino really split a 20.8 at easterns? Or is that a typo? That's pretty quick..hopefully his other teammates can break the 23 barrier (he can't do it alone). Yeah it's going to be an interesting divisional meet, looks like Jericho is out to make a statement going into counties (they're not going down without a fight). Watch for some quick relays in the next two weeks. And no I never saw that article from sports illustrated, I'll have to get it from someone. Great to finally here a BIT of swimming is getting the coverage it deserves. | ||

| jayhawkswimfanPosts: 5Location: Join Date: January 27, 2009 10:55 AMSend Message | Jericho and GNS are going to be doing battle friday night and saturday morning of counties for the title. i think long beach is going to clinch third place no other team has been able to beat these top 3 except for top 2. if jericho or gns has poor performances watch long beach sneak up on them for 2nd place. they arent going to go down wihtout a fight. and i think its safe to say the jayhawks have been brought down to earth and are going to have to do some soul searching for this county title. granted gns has their guns and LB has cabasino jericho just has so much depth all across the board. hopefully that`ll make the difference. this could be the closest county meet in years. | ||
| nassauswimfanPosts: 61Location: Join Date: December 10, 2007 7:51 PMSend Message | Last years meet was a great meet...LB lead but Jericho and GC were hot on their tail......This year look for Diving to be a huge difference. Jericho and GNS are both sending 4 divers to the meet....lets see who has the will power to come back top 20....LB has Nick Smith but will his 24 or 21pts be enough? Can both Jericho and GNS get multiple kids in the top 20. If they can they wowsers! The races that will determine the meet....Can GNS win all 3 relats or will LB or Jericho take some pts away...Which 4some of breaststrokers willscore more...GNS or Jericho....Where will OJ swim....Can NS make up for the pts jericho will score in the 50??? This weekend should answer lots of those questions | ||
| NYSPHSAASwimmerPosts: 13Location: Join Date: January 28, 2009 2:04 PMSend Message | Yeah, no probelm. You guys all pretty good swimmers I take it? Wow, I have never seen so many posts about boys high school swimming. Are they pretty crazy about it in Long Island or is this just by chance? In Western New York, boys swimming never gets any attention in the media unless someone wins states. And Logan Todhunter? Funny thing, I'm actually friends with her | ||
| nassauswimfanPosts: 61Location: Join Date: December 10, 2007 7:51 PMSend Message | funny you say that....even when records are broke...still no press | ||
| GNSrebelfanPosts: 15Location: Join Date: January 27, 2009 6:48 PMSend Message | NYSPHSAA are you a competitor? If you are, maybe your local paper has the same "talkback" on its website. Could be a great way of getting feedback/interest locally. I don't have a problem visiting other websites to give feedback. Might be a good way of peaking interest in your local area? Just a thought....Its in everyone's interest to see swimming succeed in all of NYS not just on Long Island. Competition between the counties just gives "bragging rights". | ||
| NYSSwimfan57Posts: 37Location: Join Date: January 14, 2009 9:42 PMSend Message | Here we go. After tomorrow we have one week until most likely the closest county meet in YEARS! Good Luck To all!! | ||
| nassauswimfanPosts: 61Location: Join Date: December 10, 2007 7:51 PMSend Message | Lets see if Jericho can bounce back like so many think they can. Wonder if LB will go under 1:30....SO many questions so little time to answer!! Good luck to all! Anyone have updates on divisional diving? | ||
| chriscrutcherfanPosts: 10Location: Join Date: January 27, 2009 5:30 PMSend Message | Section 8 was faster posting the Eastern States results. I wonder why Diving is taking them longer.. | ||
| NYSSwimfan57Posts: 37Location: Join Date: January 14, 2009 9:42 PMSend Message | I ended up watching diving and all three swimming divisions. Wantagh's James O'neil took 1st with a 440 (from what I could hear) and LB's Nick Smith got 2nd with a 404 (Both state qualifying scores!). Good job Boys! Also, Nick Cerra posted a 1:57 IM while GNS's Sam Mo did a 1:58 200 IM...will they duel at counties? As far as the relays went, there was nothing impressive aside Bellmore-Merrick's medley going 1:44 (sleeper 2nd place?) having I think Kowalsky anchor at 21.8. Also, where did LB's Chris Corrigan come from (56.5 100 fly)? Is he related to the LB star last year Tim Corrigan? And seeing a couple 22's and 49's for the 50/100 free, these races may turn out a little closer than we all think. The one thing that stood out was Sewanaka's Nick Spinella going a 53.1 100 back almost breaking the county record set last year by Michael Ahern. Watch out for that record to possibly go at counties (52.98 is the record). Watch out for some good races next weekend! | ||
| chriscrutcherfanPosts: 10Location: Join Date: January 27, 2009 5:30 PMSend Message | It looks like Joseph Tucker swam the anchor for Bellmore Merrick's medley relay, not Kowalsky. Where'd Tucker come from? I hadn't heard anything about him, but now it looks like he could be making waves (no pun intended ). | ||
| topswimmer@optonline.netPosts: 5Location: Join Date: January 8, 2009 11:09 PMSend Message | Your question regarding the Corrigans. Yes, they are brothers and they have a few other athletes in the family. Chris has been focusing on other sports but has obviously retuned to swimming. Nice effort for him and LB!
