according to nassau schedule, all teams had 11 matches

except gns(10),independents(9).

if this is correct how is the unbalanced schedule accounted for as it relates to individual seedings and awards?

I think all Nassau schools are supposed to have ten matches against other Nassau schools and one home match against the independents (Since the independents do not have a home).  Thus, all Nassau schools should have eleven (10 + 1) matches in total.  Judging by what you said above, GNS may not have a match against the independents.  That is not a big deal because the match against the independents do not count towards the school standings, and county playoffs and championships, but they do count towards individual records (This way the independents could participate in the individual championships).

if each school has 11 matches, then the max amt of matches any individual fences should be 33.

yet an independent fencer only gets a max of 27.

is this taken into account?

are seedings and awards based on winning per-centages?

As far as teams go, yes, it's a 10 match season plus the independents.  South also played Mamaronceck this year, so, they have 11 plus the indy's.  Now, the indy's; that's pandora's box right there.  It's just a real cluster sometimes.  And there are those who want the indy's swept away like the old republic(that's for the real fans out there).

this is the first year my son has fenced(independent).i certainly do get the sense that "teams"(coaches) view independents as a bother.

why?

there are some very talented men and women independent fencers.

i am told independents have one mens nassau cty championship 3 consecutive years prior to last year.

It's not the fencers themselves, but, the organization of the meets themselves.  personally i think the indy's should fence as one nomadic team and follow the same team format as everyone else.  it's a difficult issue.  But the problem lies when there's 7 epee boys but only one sabre.  Then the those 7 epee's might fence in two groups against the host school.  So then the top 3 fence along with the 4,5,6 fencers.  Now if all 7 of the indy's are the same caliber as the team's top 3 how is it fair that the 4,5,6 kids get creamed.  What happens in that situation is an unbalanced record.

I'm a little tired so i don't if i'm making sense here, but, it comes down the organization of the independents, not the kids themselves.  It's just a touchy subject with some people.  I would like to see the schools that have independent fencers make an effort to put teams together.  There are only 9 teams in the county.  If a few of the independents put together teams and brought the number up to 12 that would be great.  3 divisions of 4 schools.  or even just that elusive 10th team.  But, it comes down to money like everything else in this world.

beginning to ramble so it's off to bed.
