What do you think about them....were they more or less expected?

TheFacts

There certainly was an upset.  Christian Thorne didn't make it to the individuals.  OH WELL.

I don't think any of the final results were too surprising, at least for the boys.  Every county champion was among the top three fencers from the season.  The only real surprises weren't who won, but how.  The first example would be that Christian Thorne did not make the finals.  Vernon O'Garra was more or less unchallenged in the finals.  Peter Freiss won in sabre, which was not a real shock.  The surprise there was that he did not have to fence off against Sam Austin.  Although Freiss had already beaten Austin in the finals, Freiss also lost to teammate Leombruno.  However, Austin lost to Nino Prodigalidad, which was quite the upset, leaving Freiss's victory unchallenged.  In foil, my only surprise is that Holmes fenced off for first against Petrie and not Sullivan.  I would say that none of the county champion results could be considered major upsets.

sullivan (melville foil) loses bouts he should win if hes not focused (happens to him all the time), otherwise he beats anyone in HS fencing. in the finals he lost to fencers he normally beats, then beats the county champ 5 to 0....go figure! Wake up Sully!

Agreed and Feigenbaum (Commack) and Murphy (Commack) should have made the individuals..

The girls results, I feel, were overall expected; Cubano in Saber, Weller in Epee, and Siskidis in Foil. Because I'm an epee fencer, I remember more things from it. Jurgielewicz, to my surprise, lost more bouts than I expected. I assumed that Clifford would've placed in the top 3 and I have no idea where this Glasser girl is coming from (this is the first time I'm hearing about her). Weller is probably the strongest girl epee in the county and deserved to get placed as 1st. Good job to everyone =)

To be fair, the County Champ had already defeated Sullivan the three previous times they fenced this year.... 5 to 0 at Ward Melville...the DE final at the JO Qualifier...and earler that day. Going 12 & 1 at the Counties and winning the Foil Championship perhaps says more about Holmes' fencing abilities than Sullivan's lack of focus.

Anyone that follows HS fencing on LI knows it all comes down to Suffolk County Championships.  Everyone assumed it would be Holmes vs Sullivan for County Champ in foil. Was it Holmes' fencing abilities that made Sullivan loose 2 easy bouts?  Was it Holmes' fencing abilities that made him loose to Sullivan 5 to 0 in the bout everyone anticipated would be so close? In my opinion, contrary to the quote above, Sullivan's lack of focus against less experienced fencers says more about the outcome of County Champ than Holmes' fencing abilities. That said, Holmes won County Champ fair & square and that's that!

Just FYI

The mission fencing camps have dorms and the dates for the sabre and and foil although not on the website yet are set.

Sabre 17-21st

Foil August 31-Sept 4

The camp always have top fencers in the country attend and for Sabre they have Wes Glon the Penn State Coach and for Foil they have Bucky Leach (both of them were past olympic coaches)

You make it sound like he didn't deserve to win, if Sullivan can't focus himself resulting in loses, then that says something about Sullivans fencing abilities rather than the turnout of the tournement.  Everyone who placed did a good job, no need to demine on Holmes because Sullivan wasn't concentrated.
