sorry, no there isn`t. how many high schools are there compared to how many universities with a softball team? i counted over 20 organizations posting try-outs in newsday looking for 18u girls this fall. do we have 20 colleges on long island with teams?

I'm with Maraudermomma - having fun and getting into college is what all the girls want and if they can better achieve that goal by playing softball somewhere - why shouldn't they play if they can find a team?Playing Travel softball is for anyone who can make a team - not just for the ultimately gifted.  There are many many colleges and having just two travel teams will not fill all the colleges needs.
your both missing what was said. your right in saying any girl who can make a team should play but the question was about an organization creating a whole new team for those who couldn`t make the original team. and could the marginal player benefit more by playing in a local league and saving the 5k that it takes to play travel ball and using it for college because they are not going to be scholarship athletes. last point was in making 2 high quality teams (not 2 total) in order to better show off the more gifted players. quality players need like talent to play with or they will not look as good. valentino and gwynn needed good 2nd and 1st baseman to help show that they could turn 2. sandberg needed a good midfield to throw out base steelers and galati needed a good catcher for all the swinging strikes she got from pitches in the dirt so that the runners on base couldn`t advance from passed balls

So the girls can only play college softball on Long Island? There is a college team for any girl that wants to play at that level.  There are 300+ Division 3 schools participating in softball. How many Jr. colleges? Division 2, Mid to low level D 1 schools? The egos cannot get in the way when choosing a school. Find a school that has your major, education should be first, and the level of ball you are capable of playing. If she is willing to put in the time and has the talent for that college she will get an opportunity to make the roster.

I hear you and have no problem with an organization forming a "Super Team" or two to play in the really tough National tourneys alowing their players to compete for a spot on the Top 50+ D1 team rosters.  More power to them if it can be done.  The games would be fun to watch.

But I also think there is plenty of room for every player to play Travel and compete for a roster spot on all the other college rosters.  I don't think they need to be relegated to playing only local LI tourneys as that would hurt their chances to get into college.  I have no statistics for this but I'll bet there were at least a hundred girls on LI who were helped last year into college by playing Travel Softball.  Not all received athletic scholarships (D3s don't call it an athletic scholarship - preferential financial aid, grants, etc but its there).

So if you are not a scholarship player then playing travel is a waste?  It's crazy to think if my daughter does not get scholarship money it has been a waste of time. Education should be first. Ask yourself this question (a little off topic) would your daughter rather play for a low middle level D 1 with no chance of winning a National Championships or making All American or play with a program that both of those goals can be accomplished.

Those of you at BAGSI this weekend. I didn't see many, if any, D 1 programs there and there were a lot of talent playing. It was D 2 (a few) and a lot of D 3 coaches watching both days.

Like I said earlier, there is a program for anyone that is willing to put in the time at the college level. Remember it's not high school or  travel where they show up at 3 play at 4 and home at 7, or they are just out of town on weekends. It is 6 days a week, minimum 3 hours a day for the whole spring semester (not counting fall)

didn`t say it was a waste of time, i said it could be a waste of $. if a local league produces the same competition level why spend all the $, time and energy playing low level travel. how much tuition would saving 4 years of travel ball (3-5k per yr) help the average family? an educated guess still tells me there are less colleges out there with softball teams than we have high schools. some kids will come up short
bibsoftballguy

what everyone is forgetting is that playing travel ball can get you into a school you may not have gotten into as a regular student,at all levels d1 thru 3,money aside

This discussion comes up every few months.  Why does it always have to be about playing in college?  Can't a parent spend money on softball so their daughter learns life lessons about working with others, setting goals, striving for personal achievement, being part of something bigger than themselves, not hanging out in front of the TV...or worse places than in front of the TV!?!?  Really, it doesn't have to be about playing ball in college.  The skills, lessons, and memories from the field will be with them forever.  That's worth something.

Lesson time fellows, giantfan that was a great post and any rebuttal from the peanut gallery would just prove how stupid they are.

Yes!!!

This thread was about Long Island 16U teams--which teams look good. which ones lost players. Admittedly there are too many teams but that doesn't mean it should be open season on 14 and 15 year old girls.

People should start another thread if they want to discuss something else.
