Does somebody have an answer?

NYSPHSAA has voted not to adopt the 43' Metal Spikes fr the 2009 Season. There for other States will be at 43' using Metal Spikes and NYS seniors will not.

this is a disappointment.  our kids are still pitching 40 (I know, any college bound player is showing their abilities at 43 in travel ball) but it would have been great prep to pitch at 43 during the school season.

43 would have helped the offensive game a whole bunch.  MOST importantly,  help a little bit in the safety of all pitchers.  I could see some of the very young pitchers being less impressive at 43.

Spikes, er cleats, would have been great considering some of the rock hard under kept school fields we play on.  The rest of the nation uses cleats, come on get in tune NY.  Injuries? How is that boys play with cleats?  You want safety? Ban some of the bats.

no way should h/s softball play in metal cleats. too much disparity in the attitudes of top players to non travel players on varsity teams. could you imagine gwynn, heenan or sandberg going into 3rd against a non travel player. they wouldn`t know how to protect themselves. i do agree with a 43` mound though. going back and forth for the upper classmen would be detrimental toward their development
thurman15

I completely agree with the ban of metal spikes, they are just injuries waiting to happen.  However, not moving the mound back to 43' was a mistake as it really hurts the better pitchers and batters who will play and practice year round at the 43' distance and then have to adjust to 40' distance just for the HS season.

43 really makes a big difference.

3 feet IS a big difference, and its about time the rules are changed. and Metal? for those of you who are worried about those "non-travel" players.. suck it up. thats what happens when you play a sport. someones always gonna be playing at a higher level than others and then it turns into a "safety issue" its really not. I think players should use everything (SPEED) they can to their advantage, And if it means sliding spikes up and scarin the crap out of the girl covering 3rd, so be it. its all a part of the game.

when teams start to fall short of feilding a roster because last year someone got 8 stitches or a player ripped up a knee from catching a cleat sliding into 2nd base you`ll see it in a different light. on long island high school softball means nothing towards getting into college. there is no reason to put the kids at risk. if a.s.a. 16u and 18u and gold doesn`t see the need for it, high school certainly doesn`t need it. if all are in metal there is no advantage- it`s all equal

See here is where you made your mistake. Softball is not all about getting into college. Believe me. The girls out there who live for this game, who eat sleep and breath softball, would have a HUGE problem with what you just said. It comes with the territory GO BIG OR GO HOME. If I dont go home with dirt and blood on my uniform it wasnt a good game. We are talking about high school athletes here. Not girls. Nobody complains about that crap in football, basketball or lacrosse. I know from experience buddy, an elbow in the mouth or a sideswipe on the track can hurt just as much as getting spiked. and 8 stitches? Only 8? come on what a baby. somebody call the whaaaambulance. And if everyone is in metal, (equal), and you get spiked, duhhh SPIKE EM BACK! Point is, its all a part of the game. If you really want to learn your lesson, ask Joe Torre what happened last time he tried to pull one over on Maury Wills in the 60's. And if you dont know who Maury Wills is you dont belong in this discussion.

sorry, but it`s your mistake and a big one at that. those girls who eat, breathe and sleep softball are the ones who are using it to get into college to extend their athletic career 4 more years. they are also the ones who are playing tourney ball in a.s.a., pony, etc. if those assns. don`t allow it when an extra 1/10 second down the first base line might mean the difference between a D1 or D3 career i`ll take their word on it. long island softball produces so few of these "athletes" you talk about it`s not worth the risk for others. would my kid benefit? yes, but i`m fair enough to know it can`t be all about my kid. sorry to call your bluff but i have a chunk of shea stadium grass from the 69 world series growing in my back yard so i hope that meets your criteria for my being part of the discussion

texas leaguer, paaleeze.....don't get lazy this winter, I'm so looking forward to more entertaining posts.  And your Mensa applications are in the mail. Only kidding. I would wish to bring this debate back to the original topic: why is NY still at 40, and how do/can we change it from the grassroots level and why can't girls use metal cleats, boys do so why can't girls?

finally, someone appreciates me! the move to 43 makes sense to me. it`ll give the pitchers more time to hone skills to impress colleges. i would say most h/s teams are throwing jrs and srs anyway so move it to 43. why girls can`t wear metal? girls rules have always been different. olympic hockey still has no checking, my mother told me girls basketball used to have a rule of only 3 steps of dribbling then you had to pass and the olympics also had no marathon untill the l.a. games because girls couldn`t possably run that far or whatever. my point is someone will take the chance and guinnie pig a new rule change and the powers that be will pay attention and formulate a possable rule change from there. lastly you can`t make softball more exciting. some players might not touch the ball all game. it`s a mental game of strategy. it`s just what you come to enjoy. remember 85% of the world is gaga over soccer but it doesn`t play here. girls might not touch a lacrosse ball much either but at least they are running up and down the field

Not a chance Suffolk. and paleeze? awww man I knew you must be a met fan! hahah kidding, of course. Im glad to hear your like me and value the golden days of baseball. Which brings me to my next point. The boys. You can make every argument over which is better, softball or baseball; but until they are played on parallel terms, it is impossible. The mound needs to be moved back, there is no question. And there absolutely needs to be some reconsideration of the ban on metal cleats. I know it is hard to adjust from rubber and plastic, and injuries are likely to occur. But think about this; would you rather the injury occur in high school, or after they recieve the scholarship and are playing with metal for the first time far away at school? Besides the potential softball recruits (and to say there are few is a little ridiculous), lets take a venture out of the cave here. This is not the middle 20th century, girls sports are a big deal. maybe if we leveled the playing field (no pun intended) to that of the boys, with things like metal cleats, greater distance from the mound, it would encourage girls and annhilate any opinions that female athletes are inferior. Because thats the message it sends, girls arent tough enough. Is that what your trying to say?
safeathome123

The discussion is interesting. I agree that 43' is a no brainer and why they haven't gone to it is baffling to me. All Showcases and almost all 18u tournaments are 43'. At that level most of the girls can put the ball in play so the pitchers move the ball around the zone to keep the hitters from getting the good part of the bat on the ball. It makes the game much more interesting and I think it would help keep some borderline softball/lacrosse kids on the softball field.

My thinking on metal cleats is based on my expierence wearing them  playing baseball and coaching boys. I can't remember anyone getting spiked and having to leave a game. I have a daughter and I am straddling the fence on this one. No one wants any of the girls to get injured, however, I have seen more girls get hit with bats that are thrown after a ball is hit, and backswings on catchers than I have seen players being spiked by metal cleats. I never played with rubber cleats so I can't say whether there is really an advantage to metal over rubber.

actually, i`m a bankee fan, when your an adolescent you go to the game your parents bought tickets for. you know my postion on metal but i`ll take the scholarship in the hand rather than the one in the bush. once your in college if you get hurt they can`t take it away. i also agree that girls sports are becoming a big deal. full ride scholarships are worth $125,000 and up but percentage wise i don`t think there are as many intensly motivated females as males. when i talk about recruits i`m talking about the elite. sorry i don`t mean to demean others but you have to have the talent to take advantage of certain equipment. i do give props to the long island girls. look at last years signings- prahalis and sandberg are the only athletes i believe that are playing for top 20 programs outside of lacrosse

i`d love to see the college game at 45. it`s proven girls have less time to react to the pitch of 70mph than guys do against a 95mph from 60. i also can`t stand those cheating lefty slappers, SWING the bat or bunt but i might just be jealous. mostly though, i`d like to see the strike zone get real. enough of the maddox/glavine 6" to 12" outside strike being called just because the catcher didn`t have to move the glove

You have a good shopping list:

1. yeah, college at 45 would be great. but I'll settle for NYS at 43 for now.

2. an umpire to call out the slapppers would be great. as it is now, the only thing they do call is the travel player who moves up in the box and front foot is outside by a few inches of an unmarked box while slappers are outside by a full yard.

3. Bad strike zones = bad umps = archaic umps. It takes a senior umpire to die before a young quality ump can move up to varsity level these days.

4. If cleats were such a menace, why haven't they been banned in boy's ball??
