Quality Catchers are few and far between. They are usually the bigger, stronger, girls, That can hit and throw, but not the fastest on the team. But if you find a good one, keep her, she is as important as your # 1 pitcher. Trouble is that most girls don't want to lean the position at a young age and by time they are 16 it is too late. Some greats to come out of Long Island recently are  Softy and Sanberg.

Good luck in your search for a catcher.

two comments:

1. Lax sucks the life out of my Long Island HS softball programs in terms of athletes.

2. Any real athlete / player can pick up catching at any age.

you really went out on a limb with #2! real athletes pick up anything. do yourself a favor and go ask heenan if after 1 1/2 years of catching is she as good as softy or sandberg. i`m starting to see why lax is sucking your program dry

Rocketech - you sure fired a wild shot on #2.  How come there is no position more sought after than catching?  I've seen several posts from teams specifically seeking a catcher.  Very few players can be a real catcher.  Other than a very top pitcher, it is the position most sought after.  Colleges drool after a top catcher.

it's a tough postion, and I guess many players are afraid to pick it up.  It's a great challenge and many should try it.  They will be rewarded.

I'm just saying a good coach can teach a good athlete to become a good catcher.  Jorge Posada.

It took Jorge Posada a long time (at least 5 years) to become a good defensive catcher. I believe he was signed as a second baseman or a shortstop. He couldn't play the position he signed as so they converted him. He was an excellent  switch hitter with pop and that is what got him to the majors. If you can hit.... they will find a spot for you. Especially in softball.

maraudermomma

Safeathome where are you coming from? Not everyone can catch and your case about making Posada into a catcher holds water for both sides. Side A is anyone can catch, well I guess that if he was drafted as an infielder and they made him a catcher then you are right. Side B Not anyone can catch well i guess that they are ahead in your argument because Posada is one of the worst catchers in baseball. You are right though he is in the line up because he can hit.

Do you even realize what is involved in making a position player a catcher. You wouldn't wish it on your worst enemy. Being an ex minor league catcher I've seen kids quit during the transition. Mauraudermom for you to call any major league catcher a bad catcher that is alot of gaul.

easy there on mmomma, I am sure that she was talking about the catchers on the Major league level and her statement is not far off. Posada does not stink as the word implies but he is not a top major league catcher and if he hit like Varitel did he would be out of a job. Her point sounded like she was saying it is not an easy thing to do and a met fan taking a shot at a yankee fan.

There are couple sports rules you live by.

1. Football: Every parent son is a running back till they run the ball.

2. Baseball/ Softball: Anybody can catch till the first play at the plate or the first foul tio to the jewels land.

If converting a kid to catcher in softball is anything like baseball good luck.

Here is a typical catchers day in Winter Training in D1 Baseball.

1. Blocking: pitching machine is set at 105 mph and make the block, the machine is then turned down to 85mph but now take your glove away.

2. Fungo Station: Coach hits fungoes at you from about 30ft no glove

3. Throws: Practice throws to 2nd, coach stand in front of pitcher's circle holds his glove up, you miss the glove you chase the ball(full sprint)

This is just some of the activities a college catcher goes through in the minors it is just turned up a couple of notches.
