One of the upstate sections had moved their season to the fall. Now there will be enough sections in one season (I believe you need six) to compete for a state championship. So basically, if Nassau would like to compete for a state title they will be forced to move to the fall. Do not expect anything to happen until 2009.

Nassau will not be forced by any committe or something to move to the fall. It will be a simple choice of remaining in the spring with no chance at a state title, or move to the fall with a chance for a state title. I'm torn on whether Nassau should move, I would like both Suffolk and Nassau to play in the same season, whichever season it may be. I find it hard to imagine Nassau staying in the spring and passing on the chance to compete for a state title.

Same here. Some schools have trouble even finding a coach. And also, I think a good amount of kids go for volleyball in the spring because there is no other sport. If it's moved to the fall, I am preety sure that sports such as football and soccer will overtake volleyball.

Volleyball is a much better, similar skills sport for basketball players, and might be a better choice than football to get ready for basketball

Football, soccer, and cross country may very well be a rough equivalent to baseball, lacrosse, track, and tennis. The advantage to the spring is that coaches get to "sell their sport" throughout the fall and winter to would-be volleyball players. Once they play volleyball, they are hooked for life, but getting them out for volleyball over other sports that are perceived to have a higher status attached to them is a whole other story. This is an unfortunate result of the middle school to high school transition and the 4 season to 3 season schedule. Volleyball is affected perhaps more than any other sport by this. Additionally, the spring season is unique in that boy's volleyball starts a few weeks after other sports begin. This gives the athletes that do not make the baseball or lacrosse teams the opportunity to still try out for volleyball. I know of many very good volleyball players who are the result of not making the baseball team. Personally, I am not in favor of the switch to the fall. It seems to be inevitable though.

| mcwham-ePosts: 29Location: Join Date: April 16, 2008 10:35 AMSend Message | if nassau is the only county in the spring, why would the rest of the state move to the spring just for them. who cares about ncaa mens, this is new york state boys volleyball. theres a difference. im not saying whether or not i think they should move, but thats just a horrible reason to say why they shouldnt. its not a legit reason at all | |
