| hcattopPosts: 9Location: Join Date: September 23, 2008 3:32 PMSend Message | Not a prediction but a comment. Seeding committee obviously felt League I was far superior to League II as top 3 seeds are from League I. Then why are 5 of the 9 teams selected from League II. A deserving team like Northport was 7-7 in the much tougher league and got left out. They'd beat W. Babylon or W. Islip I bet who both got in. I say .500 record and you're in. Let W. Islip the 7 seed play Northport on Saturday just like Sachem North and W. Babylon are doing. | |

I guess if its not their favorite Garden City or Manhasett we're not going to hear about it. There were some really interesting and close games in Suffolk yesterday and not even a mention in the paper. Now I realize field hockey is not the most followed sport out there but could we get a paragraph or two? They send a reporter to cover the 8-9 game and write a big article about West Babylon's "dream season" and the next day they get drubbed by Melville 7-0. Melville and Sachem East played a classic to end the regular season last week and Newsday could care less. The B division has some great games coming up with SWR, Sayville, etc. and I'm sure they'll cover none of them. Come on guys wake up- Garden City is a nice story and all but the lions share of good field hockey is played east of Rte. 110 You guys have cars don't ya? GC will cruise through Nassau again and Newsday will get all lathered about it and the Suffolk games will be hard fought close battles and Newsday will ignore them.
| longhitPosts: 7Location: Join Date: September 15, 2008 11:41 AMSend Message | This happened last year too, people complaining about a perceived lack of coverage of Suffolk field hockey by Newsday, then within the next two weeks there were several fine articles on Suffolk teams. I say take it easy, Newsday always seems to me to give roughly even coverage to both counties in the end. Its only first round games right now. And the article on West Bab the other day was nice, wasn't it? The article on Manhasset was only their first one of the year, and their coach and seniors certainly deserved the shoutout. Manhasset hardly receives special treatment. I'm sure a Shoreham Sayville game will get good reportage if it happens, as will Sachem E /S'town E, and the finals with Ward Melville will get good coverage as well. I'm sure all county finals will get coverage. | |

| fhfanPosts: 2Location: Join Date: October 20, 2008 3:05 PMSend Message | Can anyone tell me if the semi-finals are to be played at a neutral site, then why is that neutral site always in Nassau County when it is always a Nassau-Suffolk playoff. And how could Adelphi possibly be a neutral site when it is in GARDEN CITY! | |
| longhitPosts: 7Location: Join Date: September 15, 2008 11:41 AMSend Message | fhfan, your post is a little confusing. If you're referring to the Long Island Championships, they are not always in Nassau. Last year they were held in Suffolk County. | |
| jr42jr42jrPosts: Location: Join Date: October 28, 2008 3:37 PMSend Message | It goes back and forth each year. Last year they were at SUNY Stony Brook- which is in Melville's district but that hardly makes a difference. Nor does it that Adelphi happens to be in Garden City. Stony Brook's Lavalle Stadium was a great venue and nice crowd's turned out. Hope for the same this year. | |
| SeaportDeliFanPosts: 15Location: Join Date: August 28, 2008 2:42 PMSend Message | Yes, it alternates between the two counties. Last year SBU was a great venue (a bit cold!). I hear Adelphi's new field is outstanding, hope our team gets to see it. | |
| fhlovahPosts: 1Location: Join Date: October 23, 2008 6:16 PMSend Message | I just want to say that I've been at a few of the play-off games so far and as for the refs, I'm pretty sure I could have called better games then them. For one game, there was a ref-in-training and I think that they should be having the best of the best at this point because of the huge importance of these games...
Also, I was at the SWR vs Miller Place game yesterday where SWR won and the refs made it look like the game was rigged. Miller Place had 15 corners in a row against them which shouldn't have happened-maybe three or four of them-but they didn't call anything against SWR. I also saw one of the refs jump in excitment when SWR scored.
.....just an observation.
| laxerPosts: 7Location: Join Date: March 30, 2008 8:55 PMSend Message | i Three local teams made it as expected. 1. Sayville vs. 8. Huntington 5. East Hampton vs. 4. Rocky Point 3. SWR vs. 6. Bayport-Blue Point 7. Harborfields vs. 2. Miller Place I like all of our teams to win Tuesday and advance to the semis Thursday. The real confusing part of the bracket is how in the world Miller Place earned a higher seed than Shoreham-Wading River. Shoreham led Division III all year until at the very end, Miller Place jumped the Wildcats in power points. If anyone cared about field hockey, this would be causing a major stir right now. But it's field hockey, so I'm sure no one has noticed outside of Shoreham or Miller Place. But Miller Place finished 12-2, 14-3. Shoreham finished 13-1, 15-2. OK, so Shoreham had a better record. But why would something like better records matter in determining standings? It comes down to power points. So MP gets the edge with 170.o10 to Shoreham's 166.43. But look closer. Who did Miller Place lose to? Shoreham. TWICE! Miller Place is a very good team that can win a county championship, but the Panthers have no business finishing ahead of Shoreham and to do so makes an absolute mockery of Suffolk County field hockey. Last I checked the Wildcats were defending county champions. And the Wildcats have won six of the last seven games between the two schools, including in the playoffs last year. Now this lower seeding doesn't hurt the Wildcats that much. It just means they have to play at Miller Place as opposed to home in the second round. But it's still perplexing and shouldn't be. You can argue the power points could work into Miller Place's favor had Shoreham played a significantly worse schedule. They did not. The Wildcats' only loss came to Rocky Point, 1-0. The Eagles are pretty good this year, right? Seeded fourth in the playoffs? Breaking down their schedules, Miller Place played: SWR: 13-1 Rocky Point: 11-3 Pierson: 12-2 Port Jeff: 7-7 East Hampton: 7-7 Comsewogue: 5-9 Hampton Bays: 2-12 SWR played: MP: 12-2 RP: 11-3 Port Jeff: 7-7 Riverhead: 7-7 East Hampton: 7-7 Comsewogue: 5-9 Southampton: 3-11 So Miller Place's opponents went: 57-41, a .582 percentage Shoreham's opponents went: 52-46, a .531 percentage One more note: SWR outscored opponents 54-7. MP outscored opponents 50-13. Sorry, but that's nowhere near enough to give Miller Place a higher seed after losing TWICE to Shoreham. Unbelievable. Onto GIRLS SOCCER: 1. Islip | |
| laxerPosts: 7Location: Join Date: March 30, 2008 8:55 PMSend Message | Field Hockey: Wildcats do it again SWR defeats Miller Place to reach county finals By Joe Werkmeister MILLER PLACE—When a question arose on the similarities of their win Thursday in the Class B semifinals to last year’s win in the same game, four members of the Shoreham-Wading River field hockey team struggled to remember the details. A year earlier they defeated Miller Place, 1-0, in the semifinals. This year they did it again, 2-0. But how did last year’s game end? Overtime? No one could quite remember, nor did they need to. The Wildcats don’t waste time reliving the past. Their focus remains on the path before them. Last year was last year. This year is about etching a new piece of history. With Thursday’s win, the Wildcats (17-2) will have a chance to win consecutive county championships Saturday at Patchogue-Medford, a feat they’ve yet to accomplish in their history. They’ll face a familiar rival, top-seeded Sayville, the same team they beat in the county finals a year ago. Two years ago the Golden Flashes ended Shoreham’s season in the semifinals. “Sayville is a very strong team,” said Shoreham coach Lea Calligeros. “They’re the No. 1 in B’s so they’re the team to beat.”Credit the Wildcats for their diplomacy. A case could have been made for Shoreham to earn the No. 1 seed in the bracket, yet they slipped to No. 3. Miller Place earned the No. 2 seed after finishing with more power points despite a worse league record than Shoreham (13-1 to 12-2). Miller Place’s two losses in the regular season came against Shoreham. “I think it motivated us,” said senior Amanda Pflumm, who assisted on the Wildcats’ second goal. “It gave us something to work toward.” The Wildcats needed just over three minutes to score their first goal when senior Amanda Muhlhausen knocked in a rebound from junior Kaitlyn Brosco’s hard shot into the right corner. On their second penalty corner of the game, senior Katie Gostic passed to the top of the circle for Brosco who’s shot was saved by Miller Place goalie Kaleigh Wilson. “[The ball] was just sitting there and the goalie was on the ground and I just flicked it backward,” Muhlhausen said. The Wildcats kept pressure on Wilson all game. She finished with 13 saves to keep her team within striking distance after quickly falling behind. Miller Place coach Alana LaMorte said after Wilson made the initial save, it’s the defenders responsibility to clear the ball. “She’s in charge of the first and third,” she LaMorte said. “It was the second one. My defense should have picked it up.” Shoreham finished with 21 corners compared to three for Miller Place (15-4). Both of the Wildcats’ goals came via corners. Brosco, who had a hat trick a day earlier, iced the game with 2:38 left, scoring off Pflumm’s assist. The play was set up off Gostic’s corner. The Wildcats had plenty of chances to extend their lead late in the first half. At one point they had 10 straight corners before the Panthers could clear the ball across midfield. “At halftime I told them it says something about a team when another team has 15 corners in a row and a ball doesn’t get through,” LaMorte said. “That says something about your defense.” While the Panthers defense withstood the barrage, they couldn’t maintain possessions in Shoreham territory to set up scoring chances. Shoreham junior Erin McMullan made three saves for her 11th shutout of the season. “The defense was amazing today,” McMullan said. “They make me look good.” “[Kaitlyn] Taddeo and Stephanie [Sorrentino] definitely do a good job on the side bringing it up,” added Brosco, who plays on both ends as a midfielder. Midway through the second half Sorrentino did just that, dribbling from deep in Shoreham territory to the right sideline and firing a long ball that ended up deep in Miller Place territory. While the Panthers season ended quicker than they hoped, LaMorte said it was a successful season. “The girls worked hard the entire season,” she said. “We kept on improving and improving. The results didn’t come out the way wanted today but Shoreham played an excellent game.” The Wildcats have had Miller Place’s number since the Panthers beat Shoreham in the ’05 county championship. Since then Shoreham has a 7-1 record against Miller Place, including the two playoff wins. Saturday’s game is 2 p.m. Sayville defeated No. 5 East Hampton 5-1 to advance to the finals. But do you not think it was rightly deserved? Its becasue Shoreham who was seeded higher than Rockpoint lost to them 1-0. So that hurt Shoreham and brought up Rockpoints points. Then a couple weeks later Miller Place who lost before to Shoreham 1-0, kills Rockypoint 5-1. That where Miller Place got the power points from and I think its rightfull. If you murdered a lower ranked team that beat the the top ranked team you should get some power points. Cant wait for the Shoreham vs Saville game tomorrow! | |

That first goal I dont know what happened I didn't think that you were allowed to lift the ball that high into the cage in regular play, but then again those refs did let many calls go. As too the 15 corners in a row, i think that was a load of crap. Miller Places defense was great and they held it up well. I knew that after the first 8 corners in a row that if Shoreham hasn't scored on these by now just let them keep going their obviously not going to score on one anytime. Cant wait for the Shoreham vs Saville game tomorrow!
I couldn't agree more. Yes, Miller Place did lose to Shoreham twice, but because SWR was ranked 1st at the start of the season, Miller Place didn't lose many points as SWR didn't gain many. As well, SWR only won 1-0 for each game played against MP during the reg. season which did not earn them many power points. A 1-0 win shows that Miller Place is still a very strong team and that they should be number 1. Also, if Shoreham really deserved the number one spot, they should not have lost to Rocky Point who were ranked very low at start of the season. Miller Place not only won againt Rocky Point, they won big with a 5-1 score. This being I said, I believe MP believe 100% deserved the number one seed.

Aside from a Riverhead or Southampton, PJeff played a brutal schedule and I think this prepped them well for the C playoffs. |
