Looking forward to the new football season. Its been a long wait. Good luck to all the teams for the coming year. I was surprised to see Riverhead as the #1 seed this year in Div. II. The team has a lot of senior leadership (26 seniors). Don't forget Newsday's football preview will be in tuesday's paper instead of the sunday edition. Begining Sept. 10th, suffolksports.com will debut, featuring all highschool sports in suffolk. The site promises to be the end all be all in highschool sports. That remains to be seen, but I look forward to viewing it. Supposidly, every game will have a write up, so check it out. God willing, we'll have a season with lots of fun, and only minor injuries. Good luck everyone.

Interesting Day @ Stony Brook

This past Saturday there were some interesting results from the Stony Brook 7v7 Passing Tournament. 30 total teams from LI, Upstate, Connecticut & Jersey (Don Bosco). Floyd, Glenn, Sachem N., Sayville went 3-1; Miller Place, Kings Park, Connetquot, Smithtown West, Sachem East & E.Hampton all went 2-2. Rocky Point & Bayport were 1-3 (Bayshore was either 2-2 or 1-3). The only team to make it into the playoffs was Floyd...they were VERY impressive. Interesting was that Floyd lost to Glenn (somehow) & Glenn lost to Sachem North. Sachem North struggled with Rocky Pt for a bit. Then Iona Prep (last years champ & a top 6 playoff team this year) beat Sayville rather easily, then lost to Miller Place. Miller Place lost to Connetquot, who in turn lost to Sayville. Not sure how it ended...but the Final 4 were New Britain, CT., Southington, CT., Canterbury, CT. & Floyd.

Nassau Conference 1

What's your opinion on how Nassau Conference 1 will shape up this year? Farmingdale seems to have a very good team. They lost a bunch of seniors but they apparently still have some very good players coming back and are getting replacements from an undefeated JV team. Freeport is always good, it doesnt seem to matter who they lose from year to year. How will Hempstead perform now that Williams is gone? Baldwin has been very competitive the last 4-5 years. Will they continue that streak? Massapequa lost a ton of talent and wont have enough to compete with the top teams for the next few years. And what about some of the up and coming programs like Syosset? As a 4 seed, do they have enough to hang with the big boys? Lastly, what about a wild card team like Uniondale? They've always had talent. Now with a new coaching staff, can they put it all together and live up to that 3 seed?

We all know that Floyd and Longwood will be good as they usually are, but there are 3 teams that I find to be very interesting in the upcoming year to see how they will do this year, and they are Connetquot (defending champs), Lindenhurst (lost in the championchip game), 3rd- Brentwood(have had good teams the past couple of years and lost in the first round to eventually champ Connetquot), how do you think these 3 teams will do in the upcoming season?

Big School vs. Small School Games: There is no way these games would happen, which is probably good for the big schools since they would have nothing to gain by playing these games. However, what would happen if these games were played?Lindenhurst-AmityvilleWest Islip - BabylonNorthport - HarborfieldsNorthport - GlennWhitman - HuntingtonBrentwood - IslipCentral Islip - HauppaugeConnetquot - Sayville

Eastport-SM Football - Bill Madsen

Bill Madsen (former HC from Rocky Point & Newfield) has recently resigned as AD/Facilities director (1-year) at Pierson/Sag Harbor and has been named the new AD at Eastport-SM. Will he support last year's new hire (Brian Sachs) or try and work himself into a dual role (ala Darren Phillips @ Southampton) and make his way back into the HC position as well as AD. It'll be interesting how this ego-maniac handles this situation in a community that is divided across the board on many fronts (athletic & academic).

West Islip Football for WILion

I have 2 local questions for you. In order, could you tell me West Islip's local rivals. 1. East Islip, North Babylon, Bay Shore, Islip, Central Islip. I may be way off base but which games would draw the biggest crowds (other than East Islip)?2. I don't know how far back you go, but who do you think are the 5 best players to ever play football at West Islip?

Newsday.comCops: Bystanders thwart Copiague purse snatchingBY PATRICIA KITCHEN AND PATRICK WHITTLEpatricia.kitchen@newsday.com and patrick.whittle@newsday.com9:33 PM EDT, June 7, 2009"He has my bag!"Ryan Harrigan heard that scream as he was rounding up shopping carts in the parking lot of the IGA in Copiague on Saturday. A shopper, Myriam Sammis, 89, of Amityville, had just been accosted - a man had grabbed her purse from the shopping cart she was pushing in the parking lot of the Merrineck Shopping Center on Montauk Highway.Harrigan, 17, an IGA employee and a senior at Lindenhurst High School, said Sunday that when he heard the scream, he set out in hot pursuit of the suspect. Others joined in the chase, including Anthony Cavasinni, IGA's front-of-store manager. The runners caught up with the suspect at a fence in a nearby backyard, where Harrigan said he grabbed the suspect's hooded sweatshirt and hung on tight as Cavasinni, 20, and other pursuers arrived. "We brought him to the ground," Harrigan said, and held him there until the police arrived."They tackled him, he fought with them, and he wouldn't let go of the stolen property," said Suffolk police Det. Walter Rouff. "They held on to him good," until police arrived.Police arrested Louis Mancini, 21, of Copiague, and charged him with third-degree robbery and fourth-degree grand larceny. He was arraigned in District Court in Central Islip yesterday and held in Suffolk County jail on $25,125 bail.Describing her experience Sunday, Sammis said she was on her way into the IGA when her purse was taken. "I screamed and screamed . . ." she said. "I'm not 90 yet, but I'm breathing on it. I'm glad I could still yell. I can't run, but I could yell."And as she was doing that, she said, she saw "a lot of good runners" rush out of the store to join the pursuit. "So many young people came out - it was amazing," she said. Harrigan said he didn't debate whether he should pursue the purse snatcher - he just ran and hoped the man didn't have a knife. Cavasinni said he got into the chase when he saw a man running past the store window carrying a pocketbook, with Harrigan close behind. "I had the biggest adrenaline rush," Cavasinni said Sunday. "I was like flash. . . . I couldn't believe how fast I was."Cavasinni, who plans to study to become a radiation technician at Nassau Community College, said in retrospect that the chase "might not be the smartest thing to do. But at least I felt good at the end of the day."Harrigan, an athlete who has played football and lacrosse, will graduate June 24 and plans to attend Suffolk County Community College. He said he hopes to pursue a career in construction development management. He said the police told him, "Good job, you did the right thing." His colleagues have been telling him that he's a hero.As for Sammis: When she got her purse back, she went into the IGA and did her shopping. And she's grateful. "If I had a million dollars," she said, "I'd do something" for the young men who sprang into action.
