He is learning 1st base on the job, which is difficult. With a full season, winter ball and spring training; he should be much better defensively and as a hitter, he will improve. 2. If Nick Johnson is labeled a Type A Free agent, there is no way the Mets will forfeit 2 draft picks for him. (If he's Type B free agent, the Mets wouldn't surrender a pick, but the Nationals would get a supplemental pick through the league). 3. History of injuries will absolutely be a factor and a concern in regards to signing him. One final note in regards to Murphy, despite his struggles this season offensively and defensively, he still has value and the Mets know that. If the right deal came along, they would trade him.
