suffolk coaches tryouts?????

You cut a kid that had 10 pts 12 rbds 2 blocks and 9 assists without getting 1/2 a game. Congragulations, you have once again demonstrated why Suffolk hoops is so bad. I won`t bother to give you the other stats with the countless tos and missed shots your selectees had so as not to degenerate any of the players

Suffolk loses basketballl Icon

Jack Foley, former AD at Ward Melville died this week. Suffolk County has lost one of the great friends of basketball to ever live here. I met him in 1960 when he was a young coach at Setauket and our lives have been intertwiined since. He truely made Suffolk and Long Island into a basketball meca during the 70s and 80s. as Suffolk Basketball Chairman. He was mostly responsible for starting the State tournys that we all love. He was a mentor for young coaches and ADs all over the Island. He is resonsible for modified sports and for starting girls sports as actual varsity teams in the 60s. He will be sorely missed

metro tryouts

I was at the metro tryouts at IG last night. It was the worst excuse for a tryout I have ever seen. 70 kids were stuffed onto 1 court. There were 2 balls. The kids played 1/2 court 5 v 5, playing against the same kids each time out. The coaches were not even paying attention to the kids over half the time. There was no officiating, even by the mostly disinterested coaches. They started the festivities 1/2 hr late. Starting scriming at 9;15 and we were all out by 9:40. BS is alive and thriving once again on Long Island

Hey Miller Place

Though I did see Port Jeff play this year, there is no doubt that despite the efforts of the kids on that team, they would have gotten pasted by Port Jefferson teams from the early to Mid 80's back to the early 70's.Overall Comsewogue, Miller Place, Rocky Point, and Shoreham are not in the same class as the teams at their high schools in the mid-late 70's to mid 80's. Why is there such a difference now?

Top New Yorker in the State and City

Tobias Harris top New Yorker in the State and City:PREP STAR - Rank 18th ESPN - Rank 19thRIVALS - Rank 27th - Just rewarded five star-Scout - Rank 29th July 9, 2009King City Classic: Tobias rulesJerry MeyerRivals.com Basketball Recruiting AnalystMORE: It Takes 5IVE: Johnson impresses | It Takes 5IVE: Chandler has promiseCLEVELAND - Make no mistake about it. The vast majority of the country's basketball talent is at Nike's King City Classic. A number of prospects stood out during the three sessions of games at Cleveland State, but none made a bigger impression than explosive lead guard Marquis Teague.Jeff Drummond/CatsPause.comTeague was on top of his game.Marquis Teague spent as much time in the paint as some of the big men in the camp. No defender could keep him in front, and his ability to navigate the high ball screen is special. Both an exceptional finisher and interior passer, Teague finished with authority on either side of the basket and racked up assists throughout the day.Other GuardsJosh Selby created the initial spark of energy for the camp with his inspired play in the morning session, and he kept it up through the night. Along with Teague, Selby attacks the basket with equal prowess going either direction and can out quick defenders as well as bully them around. Selby has the athletic explosiveness and skill set to be an elite guard for years.J.T. Terrell drained three-pointer after three-pointer on Wednesday. Wired with the ultimate scorers mentality, Terrell does let a previous miss or defensive pressure thwart his desire to score. This mentality works well for him when he is on the role and/or his team is on the ropes. The Wake Forest coaches will need to work with him on shot selection, but they have to be awful happy they will have a scorer who presents them that challenge.Jelan Kendrick displayed the qualities that have shot him up near the top of the Rivals150 rankings. Playing the point guard position the majority of the time for his squad, Kendrick repeatedly got into the lane and created opportunities for himself and his teammates. Early in the day his shot missed off the back iron, but he was soon dropping in his patented floater. A prolific right handed slasher, Kendrick also went to work with his left hand when defenders forced him that direction.Keala King has spent most of the time playing off the ball since he is in the same rotation with Teague, but he has been able to display his passing ability in transition situation and on the occasional pick and roll with teammate Jared Sullinger. King has also contributed in a big way as an offensive rebounder and by being an opportunistic scorer.Kendall Marshall is well known for his ability to pass the ball up the court, and he rewarded his teammates who ran the floor on Wednesday. His jumper was a little shaky, but Marshall used his developing physicality and ever present craftiness to get into the lane with regularity.Jamal Branch impressed with his overall play. He has a burst of athleticism, doesn't over dribble as a point guard and makes plays on the defensive end. Will Barton did his usual damage with his scoring and rebounding. His shooting touch sometimes comes and goes, but he always uses his effort and length to impact the game in a positive manner. He is one of the better competitors in the 2010 class.Reggie Bullock isn't afraid to compete either. He was impressive on the defensive end as well as on the offensive end where he can produce points with relative ease. Close to being a pure shooter, Bullock also has the athletic and physical presence to make him the top shooting guard in his class.Jeff Drummond/CatsPause.comMike Gilchrist was impressive in several areas.Daniel Bejarano has had to fight through adversity this summer and started off the day slow. But he found the range with his jumper in the night's playoff round and had several huge shot blocks on Selby andHarrison Barnes at the basket to help his team pull an upset win.ForwardsTerrence Jones continues to impress with his versatility. The big left hander scored, rebounded, passed and blocked shots at a high level throughout the day. He has a unique feel for the game and could be something special if he plays in a system that utilizes him as a facilitator and runs the offense through him.Mike Gilchrist had a great showing in his afternoon game. The story is the same. No one competes harder or plays more physical. Gilchrist made plays off the bounce and also knocked down a deep ball. Perhaps most impressive was his lock down defensive effort on Austin Rivers.Tobias Harris has secured a five-star ranking when the Rivals150 is updated after the summer. The question now is how high of a five-star ranking. A skilled four-man like Jones, Harris is as versatile of scorer as there is at that position in his class. His composure in scoring situations is unique with his ability to attack off the dribble and then finish with runners, jump hooks and pull up jumpers. There is a Carmelo Anthony feel to his game.C.J. Leslie is also on the verge of breaking into the five-star ranks. He might be the best traffic rebounder and shot blocker of all the four men in the class. And on Wednesday he finished with more efficiency than in past settings. A great playmaker with the ball in his hands, Leslie would shoot up the rankings if he demonstrates improvement in his finishing at the basket and shooting in general.Adonis Thomas is on his way to establishing himself as an elite small forward in the 2011 class. His jumper is improving, and all the other tools are already in place. Similar to Gilchrist as a player, Thomas is just a notch below the No. 1 prospect in 2011.Quincy Miller displayed flashes of brilliance on Wednesday. When he didn't look so good, it was a strength issue. The skill set is in place for this elite prospect. The big challenge is to get stronger.Roscoe Smith swung from looking terrific to no so good throughout the day. Poor decision making and a lack of physical strength got him in trouble during the bad stretches, but when he played within his rhythm offensively, he was very good. Wired with a competitive nature, Smith is rough around the edges talent who could really blossom in the right situation in college.Jeff Drummond/CatsPause.comJared Sullinger continues to physically dominate his opponents.Post MenJared Sullinger continued his nasty habit of breaking down the weak in body and/or heart on Wednesday. Straight out of the Kevin Love book of physical play, Sullinger dominates with his body, surprising athleticism, high skill level and knowledge of the game. His love of contact and his nasty streak puts fear into his opponents.Perry Jones, however, stood up to the challenge in his encounter with Sullinger on Wednesday. Jones actually blocked Sullinger's first three post move shots. After those three plays, Sullinger figured some things out and did score on Jones, but Jones made things difficult for Sullinger when he was on the court with him. Unfortunately in the second half, they were rarely on the court together. Jones has really blossomed as a player this summer. He is competing at a higher level on both ends of the court. His coast to coast finger roll finish with a behind the back dribble along the way was one of the highlight plays of the day.Adreian Payne put together one of the best performances we have seen him have in his opening game of the event where he got the best ofRakeem Christmas. Payne did most everything you would want out of a big man from blocking shots, rebounding in traffic, scoring in the post and hitting open jumpers. If Payne demonstrates the potential to sustain this type of effort, he will slide up the rankings from his present No. 20 spot. Dwight Powell was one of the more pleasant surprises of the day. He impressed at the NBA Players Association Camp, but he impressed even further on Wednesday. The second tallest player at the camp behind Perry Jones, Powell has impressive mobility and a rapidly improving skill game. He rebounded outside his area and scored both inside and on the perimeter. A focused and intelligent competitor, Powell has quite a high ceiling.Recruiting NewsTobias Harris quickly rattled off Tennessee, Connecticut and Syracuse when asked about his school list. He then mentioned Memphis and Kentucky as schools that have just started recruiting him. Kentucky has yet to offer. Notre Dame, Georgia Tech and West Virginia are still on his list as well.

I just saw today that Lindenhurst is moving down to league two this year and Commack is moving up into league 1. How do you think that each team will do in their new league? I think Lindy can adjust to the move but I feel that Commack will have a tough year and time adjusting to league one, Longwood and Brentwood should be very good again and their are a number of .500 teams that that could be decent teams. I do not know much about league two for next year, can anyone help me out with league two for next year?

OSNA / Steele Davis Situation

Maurice WingateNYCHoops.net PublisherRelated Links:Earlier Steele Davis StoryWhat are your thoughts on Steele Davis?Talk about it in the Message BoardsIn April, NYCHoops.net wrote an article about an up and coming sop****re by the name of Steele Davis, who currently plays for Our Savior New American. N. CadoganNeville Davis as a 16 yo sop****re in 2005According to Davis, during his first interview with NYCHoops.net, he claimed that he is currently a 16 year old sop****re, but allegations have surfaced that would appear to not only contradict that claim but more.NYCHoops.net was contacted by AAU Coach, Nate Cadogan, who said he coached Davis in 2005. "His name isn't Steele Davis, it's Neville Davis and he played for me on the Lamar Odom All-Stars," said Cadogan. The Lamar Odom All-stars a/k/a Team Odom is an AAU team sponsored by and named after the LA Lakers NBA star. Cadogan provided NYCHoops.net with a team photograph, including Neville Davis, and a copy of the Davis' signed 2005 team application which Neville Davis lists his date of birth as May 5th 1988 and his high school as Pacific High School. Cadogan said that he recently ran into Neville Davis in March, after reading the NYCHoops.net article, at the CYP Tournament in Port Chester, NY where he was playing with a team called Frenji Sports under the name, Steele Davis. Cadogan says he confronted Davis regarding his correct age. "He (Davis) told me he was 19, but I know even that's not true if he was sixteen back in '05," says Cadogan.Ken Coard is listed as Davis' High School Coach at a Pacific High School on the 2005 Team Odom application but Coard said that he didn't coach Davis in high school. Coard said, "I met him at the Berkshire School, where I coached in 2005. He just came for a visit." Coard said that Sean Arnold, who coached Team Roc, originally told him about Davis. "Sean told me that he saw Neville (recently) playing with Our Savior New American at a tournament," said Coard.NYCHoops.net contacted Steele Davis' current school, Our Savior New American (OSNA) in Centereach, NY where he listed his date of birth as May the 5th but 1992, according to OSNA Head Master and Coach Bob Bass. Coach Bass said that according to the transcripts received on 'Steele Davis', he was a freshman at RISE Academy and transferred to Scotlandville Magnet High School in Baton Rouge, LA. The reason sited by Davis for leaving RISE, according to Bass, was because RISE did not meet NCAA standards.NYCHoops.net contacted Sam Rimes who runs RISE Academy school in North Hills, PA. Rimes said, "First off, RISE Academy is not a high school. It's a basketball academy so I don't why he'd list us. He came to me in June of 2007 and said he was 17 and wanted to be a repeat sop****re. I put him in Northeast Prep but he had no transcripts. "When asked why he had no transcripts, Rimes says, "He said he lost them in (Hurricane) Katrina."Steele Davis as a 17 year old Freshman at RISE Academy in 2008Joyce Kall, the executive administrative assistant at Northeast Prep, in North East, PA confirmed that a Steele Davis was, in fact, enrolled at Northeast Prep from February 2008 until 3/25/08 to take 2 ninth grade courses. "We asked him (Davis) to produce a birth certificate and he never came back," said Kall, when asked why the stay was so short. When asked, did Northeast Prep send a transcript to Scotlandville Magnet, Kall replied, "Yes, on April 12, 2008 but it listed him as receiving two failures because he did not complete the courses."Ms. Askins, from the guidance department of Scotlandville Magnet High, said that they have no record of the Northeast Prep transcript but did not know why. When asked about Davis' enrollment, Askins said, "It looks like Steele was enrolled from 4/10/08 until 5/22/08 and has 4.5 credits."As far as which school Davis attended in Louisiana, Rimes says, "He (Steele Davis) told me he went to Booker T. Washington High School in New Orleans, LA but I found out from another player, who was from New Orleans, that Booker T. is actually a Middle school and that it had closed before the hurricane (Katrina)." Rimes added that Davis disappeared from his academy in early April when he couldn't produce his transcripts and birth certificate. "He left all his clothes here and just left," says Rimes. The pattern that seems to have emerged is, that Steele/Neville Davis has gotten through the high school system without actually producing a birth certificate. When ask to produce one, he flees to another school. When NYCHoops.net tried to contact Steele Davis directly by telephone, a voice message said that his message box was not set up. Shortly thereafter, a response came via text message from a person who claimed to be his aunt, who said Steele left his cell phone at her house. All additional attempts to reach Steele Davis since then have received no replies.Amazingly, NYCHoops.net has determined that high schools don't, as standard procedure, require transfer students to submit birth certificates or any form of official identification (ie. social security card, passport etc.). They determine grade and age only through previous transcripts. In the case of Neville/Steele Davis, he appears to have been able to generate a 9th grade transcript, even though it reflects that he failed or didn't attend or complete courses based on the assumption that his transcripts were somehow lost during Hurricane Katrina. When the schools or institutions that Davis attempted to attend or was attending confronted him and asked for a more definitive forms of identification, like a birth certificate, Steele/Neville Davis fled, according to reports. The allegations of the false representation of age and identity with regard to Steele/Neville Davis raise questions and concerns as to how easy it is for a student-athlete to slip through the cracks and garner college attention based on the belief that a player is younger and more developed then he actually is. This allegation of perhaps a 20 year old man claiming to be a 16 years old boy is particularly disturbing in that a legal adult could theoretically be interacting with minors while at school or in other social settings.

Only surprising thing IMO is how quick it occurred- figured they would wait til next year. Now, like the colleges with one-and-done players, we'll see who LUHI will bring in.

An ppeal to youth jr high and hs coaches

I was at an aau tourny in New England, there were over 30 kids there 6 10 or better, another 40 6 8 . There are basicly no bigs on LI today. I would appeal to middle school coaches to go through your middle schools and search for the tall spindly unathletic kids, not just the physically developed kids that will make you a winner at that level. Its not important to win at that level(I should I guess be talking to youth coaches too. Too many potential bigs are eliminated today by the win now selection process I see going on in schools today. Spend 2/3 at least every day working on off and def skills, and 1/3 on team skills. The kids do not need to know the varsity coaches motion off in middle school. (probably don`t need it in hs either) They need how to pass catch triple drive shoot and defend . Then you only need simple 2 and 3 man plays and a little spacing to help these kids have fun and play the game. Even in hs at least 1/2 practice time should still be teaching these skills. Spend 30 min a day working with the bigs and you will have them when they are 17 or 18. Winning now might help your ego, but its not helping your kids or growing the game on LI

I dont think there is a debate anymore of who is the best team. Luhi has proven themselves that when healthy they are by far the best team in L.I and the second best team in the state after Rice. During the win streak they beat team like St.Anthony's Jersey City and blew out the vaunted Jamesville- Dewitt. Also held All Americans like Donte Taylor and Brandon Triche to some of their worst games of the season while they beat their teams. There isnt an arguement anymore Luhi is clearly #1.

Final Class D State rankings

The New York State Sportswriters do a weekly ranking of the teams in each class in the State. THIS is their final ranking of the top three in Class D. . . Class D Record ===== ==================== ===== ===== 1. South Kortright-4 26-0 3. 2. Greenport-11 22-4 2. 3. Maple Grove-6 21-4 1. As you can CLEARLY see. . .Maple Grove dropped from 1 to 3. . .and Greenport is ranked AHEAD of them. I'm pretty sure that they know a heck of a lot more about basketball than maplegrovedragons#1 professes to know.

Harris' Nationwide Journey Begins UpstateJay MumfordNYCHoops.net Staff WriterTalk about it in theMessage BoardsTobias Harris will be a busy young man in the spring and summer of 2009. He's even busy right now -at 10PM on a blistering cold Monday night- getting in a low key shooting session at the Wyandanch HS gym. M. WingateTobias Harris looks forward to Glens FallsBut both this session and his forthcoming traveling AAU schedule hinge themselves on one achievement…A NY State Class 'A' Championship with the Long Island Lutheran (LuHi) Crusaders. "I've been working out constantly", said the 6-foot-7 Harris. "Just staying in the gym and trying to get better. We (LuHi) are focused on winning these two games and finally getting a championship." The independent powerhouse are currently the last team standing on the peninsula, and all eyes in Long Island are fixed on Harris & Co. After all, the best of the region all saw their seasons end over the last ten days. Uniondale? Done. East Hampton? Done. St. John The Baptist? Done. Oyster Bay, Malverne and Greenport? Done, done and done. Add to that the speculation early in the season that Harris' severe ankle injury would dim the Crusaders' chances for an upstate run, and it's definitely ironic that LuHi is LI's lone glimmer of hope. But according to Harris, the Crusaders' vibe is more one of focus than pressure. "Nah, not really", Harris said of any pressure surrounding he and his teammates' first trip to Glen's Falls. "We've been playing well and won our last eleven games, so we're just trying to keep up what we've been doing to get us here. We want to make it thirteen wins with these two (for the championship)." A 60-58 upset win over St. Anthony's on February 10th -to hand the NJ powerhouse their first home loss in six years- would be an example of the LuHi team that has to show up to have a legitimate shot at taking it all. "That win was a big boost for our confidence", Harris revealed. "(And with my ankle), that win just made me feel like I can be out there and should be.. I've been playing well since I've been back."Should the Crusaders take care of business against Curtis (Staten Island), they will face Syracuse University-bound Brandon Triche and his vaunted 23-1 Jamesville-Dewitt squad, who many view as the best NY State has to offer. In a true test of both LuHi and Long Island basketball, the big man's second game in Glen's Falls will appropriately be on a big stage. "That's going to be a big game", Harris' father Torrel said. "And it should be a really good game, but there won't be any Jamesville-Dewitt if they (LuHi) don't win against Curtis. The team has to be focused and not think two games ahead when there's another game to be won beforehand."As for the near future, the high D-1 recruit is suiting up for Torrell Harris' Unique All-Stars AAU squad for the iS8 and summer tournaments, in addition to a stint with Nike's City Rocks team. "I'll be playing (all over the country) in the top Nike tournaments like Peach Jam and Boo Williams with City Rocks", Harris revealed. "We have a pretty good Unique All-Stars team for IS8 too, we should be able to win it all."A spring and summer packed with traveling and high profile AAU hoops notwithstanding, the road to all is still paved through Glen's Falls. A championship is the correct frame for a promising portrait, and Harris knows and believes."We've been having great practices and games, I really think we can win it all this year. We want a championship."
