Nike Indoor Nationals

I heard that there were 35 national records set at the Nike Indoor Nationals and Long Island did well there with many Long Island all- americans. Yet - virtually no Newsday coverage. Very disappointing. I think the Chaminade 4x800 finished 5th (qualified as Nike all americans) and the first 2 teams broke the national record. Of course Emily Lipari did great (congratulations!) and there were many other great LI performances. Common Newsday - spare a few words.

Why No Girls MacArthur High School Conference Champs in Newsday?

Our Girls Winter Track team won their Conference Championship meet Friday night at the Armory. I am wondering why this was not covered by Newsday? Can it still be covered by Newsday? Lots of winners from our team and some records were set. Please advise. Thank you.

Bellport sprinters suspended?

Rumor has it the Bellport boys sprinters aren't running because they've been suspended. Something about the football field starting construction that would have caused the boys divisionals to be moved from Bellport's track, so the sprinters took a stand and led a rally to delay the construction and keep the meet at Bellport's track...and got suspended for their troubles. They run very well so it's a shame if true. If Newsday is sending someone out to the track for the second day on Monday, they ought to investigate. Having grown up in a town where football is king, it sounds all too plausible that anyone who stands up to football will be crushed by the administration.

Congratulations to Da Kid from Da Hills, now Da Man from Da Hills

Congratulations to Kyle Merber on his thrilling victory in the Millrose Games Boys High School Mile Run in a torrid time of 4:13.86 for the 11-lap to the mile oval in Madison Square Garden. Many will argue that his time of 4:12.42 in the Reebok High School Mile at the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston is "faster" than tonight's victory. However, take it from someone who knows what it's like to run on that "little" oval in Madison Square Garden, tonight's time is superior to the Boston time, even though it may appear to be slower from just looking at the numbers. Kyle's growth and development this past year has been nothing short of great and he is truly now "Da Man from Da Hills!" Our hats are off to you Kyle. Just one person's observations.

Bishop Loughlin Games coverage?

Hey Newsday, where were you for yesterday's Bishop Loughlin Games? Some of our talented athletes from Long Island where there to compete with the best the East Coast has to offer. Well, you definitely dropped the ball on this one. Many years ago I delivered Newsday for my manager Charlie Winters. I loved to play sports and we would often talk about what a great newspaper Newsday was in covering high school sports in Suffolk County. In the spirit of hoping to regain some of that wonderful public service Newsday provided to the youth of Suffolk County (and Nassau County as well) back in the day, the following is what you missed: 1. Dennis Scruggs, a senior from Bellport HS torched the track in the 2nd seeded heat of the 600 (his previous best of 1:22.83 was not fast enough to get him into the seeded heat) to win the 600. His winning time of 1:20.28 is the fastest time in the US this winter season. It is also the new Suffolk County record, eclipsing the 1:21.96 held by Commack's Kyle Fiasconaro set in 2004. Dennis also added some additional fire onto the track with his blazing 22.1 anchor leg of the winning 4x200 relay which won in 1:30.85. 1a. Kellenberg Memorial HS win the boys 4x800 relay in 7:59.81 1b. Vanessa Stewart, a sop****re from No. Babylon HS won the girls SP in a meet record 44' 8.25'', almost 2 feet further than her previous best from earlier this season. 1c. Emily Lipari, a sop****re from Roslyn HS won the girls 2 Mile in a time of 10:43.49. 1d. Brianna Welsh, a North Shore sop****re wins the Mile in 4:59.27. In the interest of not making this posting too long, I'll summarize the results for places 2nd through 6th as follows: Six other young men and women placed 2nd in their events. Five other young men and women placed 3rd in their individual events, as well as two relays also placed 3rd. Five other young men and women placed 4th in their events, as did a relay. One young lady placed 5th, as did another relay. Four young men and women placed 6th in their events, as did a relay. Hopefully, you'll send someone to cover the Hispanic Games the first weekend in January, when the next big meet will be held at The Armory after the Christmas break. The Marine Corps Holiday Classic will be held on the 27th of this month, but some of our finest may not be there due to visiting family during the Christmas break.Just one person's observations.
