2 on 2 Epee Tournament this Saturday NSFC

As if individuals is not challenging enough. Interested in doing something completely different and a LOT of fun? This saturday, March 21st at NSFC, there is a 2 on 2 (that right real TEAM Epee where both fencers fence two other fencers at the same time, on the same hook ups, first touch scores the point, and the person touched sits out the next point) That means lots of 2 on 1's. Imagine, two opponents at the same time. Reaching across the strip and nailing an opponent. This is the ONLY event where you can feel like ZORRO!FCLI started this event years ago, and picked up by NSFC when FCLI went out of business. Lots of mixed teams (male/female) and is a great way to test your reflexes.http://askfred.net/Events/whoIsComing.php?tournament_id=7895I made it easy for you. Click on the link above and register today.

So what exactly is the All-County Selection award? What does First and Second Team mean? Is it just a peice of paper or does it mean anything? Does it determine who fences in LIC or is that between team winners of S and N?

Lets Fix Nassau County Fencing

What we have here is the proverbial "failure to comminicate". If Robert P. was the head of the Nassau coaches last year, somebody else this year, and there are several different rulebooks flying around and being applied, then WE have a problem that bickering will not solve. The problem is that fencing in Nassau at the high school level is nowhere near as organized as is Suffolk. This does ultimately hurt kids. Every Suffolk HS result is posted at Newsday.com, they even have posted standings. Nassau, no standings, and minimal results are reported. Why? Because Nassau lacks organization. I understand that some of the coaches try to take the bull by the horns, but it hasn't, and isn't working. We need a steering committee of coaches, parents, school administrators, etc.... to work with the governing body in Nassau (Section VIII) so all information, from coaches first aid certification, to what rules will be followed, as well as a "method" to detrmine disputes are decided on and disseminated.I suggest a website, on behalf of Nassau County HS Section VIII Fencing, where rules, requirements and results can be posted and relied on. If everyone feels as passionately about this sport as is reflected here online, it would be to everyone's benefit. Hey, we can even have some of the private clubs pay $5.00 a month so we can pay for the service fee' for maintaining and hosting the site. Every Nassau high school fencing team can even have their own section about their team which the coaches can upload information on their team, etc.....Its the lack of information that is killing this sport in Nassau County.

Nassau County Championship Abomination

Shame on the Nassau County people in charge of todays out of control event at GNN High School. Shame on those coaches that also allowed it to happen. I will refrain from calling people out, but todays event was the ABSOLUTE worst event I have attended in over 20 years of fencing. The facility was fine, the GNN people were hospitable and friendly. Even the refereeing was not as bad as in the past. I am focusing on the event adminstration and coaches (because they too let this happen). Parents coaching teams?, obvious #1 slot fencers purposesly put into #2 slots to skew the results? (and in one case it was MORE than OBVIOUS), and finally - NO INDIVIDUAL tourney, as promised, because of what was called "a computer glitch" that would have forced all the fencers who qualified to allegedly wait over an hour for seeding, but by the time it was announced, it was already 8pm.Also, how can it be that the GNS and GNN coaches failed to not only attend the coaches meeting on thursday, but also failed to submit their rosters on thursday as per the deadlines agreed upon in advance? Then how can those two schools NOT forefeit their first round bouts when they handed in their rosters 15 minutes before the start of the actual event? You can BS the kids, but you CAN'T BS me.8 fencers in each weapon got absolutely SCREWED by the people running the event. If you can't get your act together, the don't do it! You have absolutely NO business running a fencing event, especially one where the kids worked their tails off to make the "alleged individual round", after changing the format from last year claiming it to be fair. And THIS WAS the format you agreed to, wasn't it?Now I know why fencing in Suffolk has a much better reputation. How can the coaches (all of them) allow the event to be run like it was. The individual tourney would have only taken less than an hour more with 8 fencers in a pool for each weapon. Plus, how do you let a parent coach a High School team when a) they are not employed by the respective school district, b) they do NOT possess the necessary first aid as is required by section VIII, and c) even after a parent complained, the complaining parent was escorted away from the area and the other parent kept coaching.I don't know who is at the top of the responsibility chain, but they must STEP DOWN immediately. Go ahead, take your shots at me, but you already did your damage. I am filing a complaint with Section VIII because those of you in charge cannot seem to get it right or lack the courage to speak up to straighten it out. I am embaressed for Nassau County High School fencing, and feel terrible for the kids. Congrats to the winners today in the team events. Those were well deserved.

REFEREES

I know I'm asking for trouble for starting this topic, but I am interested to hear which referees you feel are best and which are worst. Rank them, explain why you feel this way, tell us what they are doing right and wrong. Discuss individual referee's strengths and weaknesses from you POV. This is a place for constructive criticizm, not outright bashing of referees.

A wacky idea for all Long Island fencers...

Instead of the top 2 in each county for All LI, how about thwe top 4 in each weapon from each county fence their counterparts from the other county in a All-star meet. the Voted "Coaches of the year" can coach those teams. Just a random idea that popped in my head. Along, with adding a fourth weapon...double-sided battleaxe maybe? Nother wacky idea.

2 on 2 Epee at NSFC This Sunday

Thats right. The FCLI 2 on 2 Valentines Day Team Epee event is scheduled for this sunday, 2/10 at NSFC (Manhasset) starting at 12:30. This is a real-time 2 on 2 event where both teams fence the same strip at the same time. Lots of 2 on 1 action. Even you Sabre and Foil people would have a blast. Its the perfect thing after division champoinships this saturday. Grab a partner, loved one, or even a teamate, heck, its all out fun. There are already 17 teams signed up and growing fast. You'll see lots of HS Fencers there. Even some of the Suffolk County HS people may dare to show up. How do you think Kobe and Dacis would fare on the same team fencing at the same time, on the same strip? This event happens once a year and is a ton of fun. It starts at 12:30 so you can even sleep in late. I heard some of the coaches will be fencing as well.Good luck to everyone this saturday!

Well, congrats to all on a great year of fencing. Her's how I see the top 5 in boys and girls. Boys: 1. GC 9-1? 2. GNS 8-2 3. JER 7-3 4. GNN 7-3 5. OB 7-3Girls: Top three at 8-2 are GC, GNN, and CSH 4. OB 6-4 5. GNS 6-4GC, GNN, and GNN are all 1-1 against each other I don't know how the tie-breakers will work. Maybe a coin toss? But, wow. Both boys and girls a great year. Anyone of these teams is clearly capable of beating the other at any given time. Those 4 vs. 5 matchups are the one's to watch. Good luck to all and to a great playoff year.

Long Island Reffs

Okay, you may all know me. My name is Stephanie Aiuto, I'm a sabrest at GNNHS and if you do know me, you are aware that I’m a decent fencer. I go to the national competitions. I travel internationally for competitions. I've been around. I'm not saying this to brag, I am saying this because some would think that if I do all of these things, I might know a little bit about fencing.Going to the high school meets and trying to fence and cheer and coach without strangling the refs has been increasingly harder to do with each passing year. And I am not just saying this because these refs make it hard for my team to win. I am saying this because every team deserves a fair shot to win and it is impossible to get that chance when not only is your director blatantly wrong on most calls, but also inconsistent with his/her calls. Now these directors may have been "around the block" but let's face it, since they got their reffing licenses (at least in sabre) the entire game has changed. Timing, right of way, actual rules. All of these have changed as a fact. Sabre has gotten faster and the right of way has gotten shorter. Different attacks mean different things. And I can see foilists struggle with trying to tell the ref the differences between beets and parries. Even the epeeists are freaking out about floor touches and the reposts while passing each other, and once a ref starts to mess up epee, there is no saving that ref. I submit that some sort of course of action be done to either remove or make each ref retake the reffing tests to renew their licenses. Something has to be done about this. And fast.

There has been some heavy topics and comments on this page, so, thought some funny stories would be nice to hear about. Ya' know, life;s little momenbts that happen. Well, they happen on the strip has well. Anyone ever make a long lunge and have their knickers rip wide open in the nether region? Or on the same lunge, accidently say, errrr, unexpectedly release a large volume of intesstinal gasses? Actually scored a touch that way. I lunged missed then braaaapppp, other guy stopped and went,"Woah!" Then I remised with a one light. Life' s little moments. I was fencing at Manhasset once.. omg i was sliding all over the place you cant even lunge, or fence well for that matter. anyone who has good foot work knows what I mean..... Anyway.. I really liked the strip Jericho had. It was a grounded Roll out strip, so its easily transportable and I felt the traction was fantastic.I cant stand wood floors anymore! Or oiled lenolioum AHHHHHHHHHH

You know that they have a great team. But how will they be in the future?SABREThey have the best sabre now. They lose their best Adam Fields and a good eddie kim. They still have David Leung. After this they have mediorcre to good backups. My team just fenced them and I lost to one of the better backups 5-1. and im good. (dont know his name)FOILFoil sucks. They lose their second best player. They still have nobody.EPPEELose their best in Austin Greenfield. I think they have a seventh grader. (don't know his name) hes suppose to be great. Not sure though.

Tanya should go

She has had her glory past, and she makes sure she tells it to people every time before the meet now, but she has decayed and is no longer state-of-the-art, she messed up the whole meet today between Jericho and Great Neck North, and almost cost Jericho the game, who can we talk to address this issue? where is the authority? Tanya has faded so much that she randomly calls something by her will, she had my respect before, but she SHOULD BE FIRED!
