My dad coached as well. He was not a volatile coach. Firm, tough, but never crossing the line. I do not have his personality. I could lose it much faster than he could.All that being said, I do not know what happened over at EI. It is however, important to note that coaches are perceived differently than ever before. The professionalization of amateur athletics has led to completely unrealistic expectations of many members of any community and probably administrations as well.Many of us have noticed that more &quot;outsiders&quot; non-teachers are coaching today. At times, I wonder what is going on with the educational profession when we allow such renegades to become part of the learning process.Athletics are supposed to be - no matter how intensely they are viewed or competed in - part of the educational experience. Unfortunately, the accusations of coaches treating children unfairly is combined with parents taking their kids on vacation at a moment's notice as well as paying for some ridiculous personal trainer or travel team.Bottom line is that the whole thing is out of whack. Think about it - particularly anybody 40 or older. Do you realize that the kids today compete in more organized game than any of us every did (with the onset of early travel teams throughout their high school years) BUT, have played probably far LESS hours of any sport than you did as a kid on the playgrounds and sandlots. FAR LESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In the vast majority of cases, it is the parents' game now not the kids. Inflated grades, athletic egos and personal self worth have turned local neighborhoods into suburban cesspools. Kids are soft as butter. Parents are full of bunk. Coaches fight to keep perspective and often give in to the unrealistic expectations and adoration of communities who think that winning is equated with good teaching. Administrators have the dual operation of libotomy and spinal removal as they give into the whim of parents.Quite frankly, all I can see now is that the Russians quit 10 years too early. They still had a chance to beat us.
