Official State Championship for 2010

Well, I have just recieved word that the rumored State Championshp has been made official. The first tournament will occur in November 2010 and it will be hosted by a Syracuse area high school. At first there was some concern that Section XI (Suffolk) had been left out of the tournament becasue an article published in the Niagra Gazette did not list it in the sections particiapting. However, a member of the Section XI staff has confirmed that Suffolk WILL be involved in this State Chamnpionship. If you want to see the article go to: http://www.niagara-gazette.com/archivesearch/local_story_132230111.html

Nassau to the fall? Why not Suffolk to the spring?

Anyone that knows volleyball knows that college coaches are not going to make a 4 hour trip to watch a state tournament to see a kid play when they can go to a club tournament and see a complex full of kids playing. The idea of having a state championship sounds great, but to move Nassau County to the fall makes no sense at all. Their are a number of factors that should be considered before making this move.1. Officials; Their just won't be enough to go around. We have issues now getting good top quality officials for varsity matches, if we move to the fall, we won't have enough, let alone good officials to officiate matches.2. Gym space; finding time to practice, scheduling mathces, trying to find practice time when the girls program has a home match. The gym will be empty in the spring, essentially won't be used. So lets move the boys to the fall so we can have a scheduling nightmare? Makes a lot of sense. Now we'll have to go back to back. JV will have to play after varsity, play 2 out of 3, not 3 out of 5, and won't get home until well after 8:00 on avg.3. When do the men play? In the spring. When do most high school programs offer volleyball? In the spring. So why move to the fall?4. My guess is most college coaches will recruit at a club tournament. Why go to a state tournament to see a handful of kids when you can go to a club tournament and see well over a hundred kids play. Move Suffolk to the spring and have a Long Island Championship. Include NYC. If you want to go beyond that, invite teams up and down the coast who play in the spring to a Northeast regional tournament. New sites each year, give the kids an opportunity to showcase their talents against the best of the best from other states.Nassau should stay in the spring! If Suffolk wants to join us, great, if not..............

St Anthonys state finals

Ok Newsday, the "hometown" paper. It's Tuesday night and no score for a Long Island team the was playing in the state finals 3 days ago. Even though I was not there, and don't have a daughter on the team, I will report off the net as you could have. Guess you were chasing down that big story on Mike Piazza writing a book in 2 years. St Anthonys having avenged their only loss to Holy Trinity during the season by beating them in the league final, moved to the Catholic state finals in Buffalo Saturday and Sunday. During pool play on Saturday, they showed their strength by going 6 and 0. On Sunday, they defeated soundly the NYC representative, St Frances Prep. In the finals, they met St Marys of Lancaster from the Buffalo region. St Marys had quite an impressive record as well, and the Home Court! After the first two games split, St Anthonys could not hold onto the lead in game three, as St Marys roared back to win in four games.Congratulations girls on a great season!! It's tough to lose the final but only one team in the state out of all of them can end the season on a win. Be proud. -Deuce Deuce Dad.

End of Season Standings Prediction / Playoff Predictions

Ok, I've crunched some numbers, and looked at the remaining games this week and I'm prepared to make my predictions of how the teams will finish the season. These are based on who is playing what team, and how many points they would recieve if thy won. Whitman falls out becasue they have no games left other teams will be active. Commack needs to beat Bay Shore or they could fall out, I'm picking them to win. If you want explination for other just ask.1. Smithtown East. 2. Half Hollow Hills. 3. Lindenhurst. 4. Smithtown West. 5. Ward Melville. 6. Connetquot. 7. Sachem North. 8. Northport. 9. Sachem East. 10. Eastport. 11. Commack. 12. East Hampton. Naturally I have the predictions ofr the playoffs as well. I'll work my way down the bracket as it appears on section 11, which means I start with:Round 19. Sachem East @ 8. Northport- I pick Northport to pull this out for the simple fact that their passing appeared more consisten this season. Don't sleep on Sachem as they knocked off the very same team in the first round as a 12 seed last year, I just don't see the depth to pull it off this year.12. East Hampton @ 5. Ward Melville- Ward Melville in an easy one, they shut East Hampton down is season with tough serving ,and a multi-faceted attack. I just don't see East Hampton competing on the same level as Ward Melville. So long as Melville keeps their intensity high they should be fine, be careful though as they tend to play down to opponents.11. Commack @ 6. Connetquot- Connetquot has been the most unpredictable team all season, beating lesser opponents, but falling in the face of competition. This is a tough one as Commack beat them in season. I say Connetquot comes to play this time, and takes Commack in five.10. Eastport/ S Manor @ 7. Sachem North- I haven't seen Eastport this season, but I know a couple players from club. Sachem North looked weak early in the season but I sense a team chemistry starting to take place late in the season. I think Eastport's passing falters, and Sachem finds their younf middle enough to take the match in 4.Round 28. Northport @ 1. Smithtown East- Smithtown comes off a strong season ending victory versus Ward Melville, and will be more than prpepared for Northport. Again I don't see enough weapons from Northport to climb this high mountain. Smithtown East in 3.5. Ward Melville @ 4. Smithtown West- This was a great match in season, and will be the toughest of the second round. McKenna will need to come out strong as West presents no conistent threat down the middle or right side. I see Melville spreading the wealth and taking this nail-biter in 5.6. Connetquot @ 3. Lindenhurst- Can Connetquot overcome the constant threat Falcone and Jablonski pose on the net. The simple answer is no, I see Connetquot's inconsistent season come to an end here in 4. 7. Sachem North @ 2. Half Hollow Hills- Hills will no doubt be fired up for this game after defeating Northport in their last game of the season. They always come prepared for hard fought fiery matches, and their setter has the experience to take this team to the semis, Hills in 5.Semi's1. Smithown East vs. Ward Melville- Simple match-up, experience versus youth. Smithtown returns enough players from last years playoff reun to offset Melville's youthful team. They will be in the correct mind-set to play in the tough environment of the semis. Great match that could see some emotion run-off from the end of season match they play on Wednesday. Smithtown East in 5.3. Lindy vs. 2. Half Hollow Hills - No doubt Hills wanted to see this team again as they come off a great in season win. Often the best match-up is in the semis and this is it. I see Hills prepared with their expereince from last year, while Lindy has shown some inconsistency this season. I see Lindenhurst cracking under this pressure, Hills in 5. Finals1. Smithtown East vs. 2. Half Hollow Hills - Great match-up of teams. I see no glaring hole that each team could exploit. Both teams match-up farily well. Hills has the advantage in setter, while East has the advantage down the middle. Outside's stack up fairly evenly, and right side goes to East. Libero has to be Hills, Goldy and Breuning have a shoot out, with both showing amazing plays, however as much as I hate to say it I see Hills pulling this one out. Big pressure situation lies on the setters shoulders, and Hills has the advantage here, Hills in 5.

After todays performance by Hills they proved to be a great team but what I really think beat Lindy is themselves. Falcone was shut down and everything went downhill from there. Lindenhurst showed their flaws with the atrocious serving and poor passing game. Everytime Hills made a mistake Lindy failed to take advantage and came right back with a bad play. The future looks bright for both teams and can be a possible championship match-up.

Hills West is a huge contender this year... they have a big outside hitter Zach Rosengard who was on the Empire State team, they have a great Libero Dan Goldstein who was also on the Empire State team, and they also have Chris Kaimis who was the rookie of the year last year. Those 3 players alone can bring the team back to the county championship for the 3rd straight year. Look out for em!

who do think will make it to the finals? Rosyln is a well balanced team with hitting at strong weak and middle. Lawrence benefits from skilled players and good coaching, the setter is a strong player. Jericho has a very strong defensive starting lineup with challenging serving fom multple players. Floral park pulled the upset over hewlett and showed that they belong in the final 4 beating vss and hewlett.

Volleyball Article Injustice

Has anyone read the article written regarding the volleyball championships between Chaminade and St. Anthony's? I was there, as a faculty member, rooting for the Friars, and I felt they were completely dragged through the mud and written to sound like rowdy animals. Did anyone have a chance to read this article? It was written by Laura Albanese. Check it out and get back to me.
