Even if we know that we thought our kids erverything they need to know, sometimes because we trust that we have instilled the proper lessons in their minds, our kids alreasy have a mind of their own. Teen pregnancy is bad, but no need to make it worse. Good grief! Husbands and wives can't even talk to each other about sex let alone their kids! Kids and teens aren't given good emotional training in terms of sexual activity. Sexual trists have been &quot;lowered&quot; to the level of picking your nose or scratching your butt instead of the most powerful act of creation and pleasure in the entire world. Teach kids BEFORE puberty: &quot;When you choose the behavior, you choose the consequences.&quot; I think teens have the mechanics of sex down, but not the emotional or future effects of sex outside of a permanent relationship. Sex Ed should not end on the mechanical aspect but on the facts of the consequences. There's no such thing as &quot;safe sex&quot; -- why do I still hear that outdated term in 2008? There should be a law in effect that makes each company name their birth control device by it's effectiveness: &quot;20% Failure Ortho Diaphram,&quot; or &quot;30% Failure Trojan Condoms.&quot; Too many teen boys can't even spell the word &quot;risk&quot; let alone the word &quot;consequences.&quot; Maybe we should drive this point home to teen girls in school sex ed classes? I'm always amazed when a teen or even an adult woman is quoted as saying how surprised she is to have become pregnant even though she was using birth control???? Is this stupidity, denial or lack of education? If parents are ineffective or unable to discuss both mechanics and emotional consequences of sexual activity, then they should pick a surrogate adult mentor for their teens, be it an aunt, family friend, teacher, counselor, planned parenthood counselor, etc. Good luck to all the young teen moms who are doing their best: motherhood is the hardest job on earth!
